Aims: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), who are often treated with intravenous iron. This observational study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of iron isomaltoside in routine practical care of IDA in IBD patients.
Methods: The study included 197 IBD patients designated for treatment with iron isomaltoside.
Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of iron isomaltoside in routine practical care of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in patients with chronic renal failure.
Methods: The study included 698 patients with IDA on dialysis or with nondialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 3 - 5 designated by their physicians for treatment with iron isomaltoside. Data were recorded at baseline and after 3 and 9 months.
The aim of this open, multicentre study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and tolerance of the Devil's Claw extract LI 174 in patients suffering from non-radicular back pain over a period of at least 6 months. A total of 130 patients were treated twice a day with tablets containing 480 mg LI 174. The treatment lasted for 8 weeks.

In a prospective, 4-year clinical trial with primary endpoint 'arteriosclerotic plaque volume' it was proven not only a 9 to 18% reduction and 3% regression in plaque volume of the total collective under the influence of standardized garlic powder dragees (900 mg/die LI 111), but also of some facets of the phytopharmacologic pleiotropy of this herb: decrease in LDL level by 4%, increase in HDL concentration by 8%, and lowering in blood pressure by 7%. The reduction of arterial blood pressure is due to an additional opening of K(Ca) ion channels in the membrane of vascular smooth muscle cells that effects its hyperpolarization.

The influence of hypericin, hypericum total extract, and hypericum fractions on the activity of MAO and COMT, prepared in vitro from pork liver, were investigated in several concentration steps. An inhibition of MAO could be shown in the following concentrations (extract correlated to a mean molecular value of 500): hypericin to 10(-3) mol/L, hypericum total extract to 10(-4) mol/L, one extract fraction up to 10(-5). A COMT inhibition could not be shown for hypericin, with hypericum extract to 10(-4) mol/L and with two extract fractions also up to 10(-4) mol/L.

The effectiveness of a standardized garlic powder preparation (Sapec, Kwai) on alimentary hypertriglyceridaemia after intake of a standardized fatty test meal containing 100 g butter was analyzed in a randomized placebo-controlled double-blind study. 24 volunteers with HDL2-cholesterol concentrations in plasma of less than 10 mg/dl (men) respectively 15 mg/dl (women) participated in the study.

We show here that the fusion of EBV-infected human B-lymphocytes to the HAT-sensitive, ouabain-resistent heteromyeloma (human x mouse) fusion line CB-F7, resulted in stable growing hybridomas producing much more immunoglobulin than the parental lymphoblastoid lines. A more efficient clonability was shown for hybridoma cultures too.

Purine nucleotides of red blood cells (RBC) during storage in two different media with addition of adenine/nicotinamide (NAP) or adenine/guanosine (CDS-AG) were estimated by HPLC. Synthesis of guanine nucleotides reached a maximum after 14 days in RBC stored with adenine/guanosine. The higher adenine concentration in the NAP solution (3 mmol/l) did not increase adenine consumption and the ATP-level of the erythrocytes.

The effect of carbohydrates (sucrose, mannitol) and guanosine on red cell vesiculation was studied during storage of red cell concentrates (RCC) in glass bottles and plastic bags for 35 days. The course of vesicle release was followed by measuring acetylcholinesterase activity. It was found that sucrose and mannitol reduce the loss of membrane microvesicles.
