Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) can be a serious complication after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). CMV viral load is routinely monitored, and pre-emptive therapy is initiated to prevent CMV viremia from developing into CMV organ disease based on institutional thresholds. There is no established universal threshold for pre-emptive therapy and many centers utilize different strategies.

Cases: In addition to previously published case reports, further cases of intravascular migration of contraceptive implants have been identified from an information request to two national adverse reaction spontaneous reporting systems. We report on two new cases of insertion into the venous system with subsequent embolism to a pulmonary artery.

Conclusion: Incorporating barium sulfate into the implant has facilitated diagnosis of these very rare adverse events with the initial diagnosis of embolism to the pulmonary arterial tree made by chest X-ray.

Rationale: Dozens of synthetic cannabinoid analogs purposefully meant to circumvent legal restrictions associated with controlled substances continue to be manufactured and promoted as producing 'legal highs'. These designer drugs are difficult to identify in conventional drug screens not only because routine protocols have not been developed for their detection, but also because their association with complex plant matrices during manufacture generally requires labor-intensive extraction and sample preparation for analysis. To address this new and important challenge in forensic chemistry, Direct Analysis in Real Time Mass Spectrometry (DART-MS) is applied to the analysis of these designer drugs.

A description of the noise associated with gene expression is presented, based on a simplified form of the combined multistep processes of transcription and translation. These processes are influenced by numerous factors, including the accessibility of promoter regions to the transcriptional machinery, the kinetics of assembly of the transcription complexes, and the synthesis and degradation of both mRNA and proteins, among others. Ultimately, stochasticity in cellular processes results in variation in protein levels.

In the past decade, the tendency to move from a global, one-size-fits-all treatment philosophy to personalized medicine is based, in part, on the nuanced differences and sub-classifications of disease states. Our knowledge of these varied states stems from not only the ability to diagnose, classify, and perform experiments on cell populations as a whole, but also from new technologies that allow interrogation of cell populations at the individual cell level. Such departures from conventional thinking are driven by the recognition that clonal cell populations have numerous activities that manifest as significant levels of non-genetic heterogeneity.

For a better understanding of complex biological processes, it is desirable to simultaneously follow the dynamics of multiple components in living cells or organisms in real time. An encoding scheme was developed that enables the observation of multiple cell populations with single-cell resolution. Specifically, different yeast cell types were labeled with quantum dots and added to an array of microwells, where they randomly self-assemble into the complementary-sized cavities.

Background: This study aims to explore the views of women concerning their choice of long-acting method of contraception.

Method: Two-hundred and eighty-six women who had either been sterilised or fitted with an etonorgestrel (ETN) implant or the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG IUS) were invited to take part. A response rate of 54% was achieved.

In the past few decades, technology has made immeasurable strides to enable visualization, identification, and quantitation in biological systems. Many of these technological advancements are occurring on the nanometer scale, where multiple scientific disciplines are combining to create new materials with enhanced properties. The integration of inorganic synthetic methods with a size reduction to the nano-scale has lead to the creation of a new class of optical reporters, called quantum dots.

Our study has shown that ultrasound-guided localisation and removal of Implanon rods is safe, practical and highly successful. Over a 4-year period, 119 patients had successful, uncomplicated removal of their subdermal devices. The technique is particularly useful for removal of the device when it is not palpable or when an attempt at removal of a palpable device has not been successful.

It was first suggested by Gold in 1948 [1] that the exquisite sensitivity and frequency selectivity of the mammalian cochlea is due to an active process referred to as the cochlear amplifier. It is thought that this process works by pumping energy to augment the otherwise damped sound-induced vibrations of the basilar membrane [2-4], a mechanism known as negative damping. The existence of the cochlear amplifier has been inferred from comparing responses of sensitive and compromised cochleae [5] and observations of acoustic emissions [6, 7] and through mathematical modeling [8, 9].

Increased breast cancer risks have been reported among women with gross cystic breast disease (GCBD), although the mechanism for this increase remains unexplained. Relationships between GCBD characteristics, breast cancer risk factors, and the biochemical composition and growth properties of 142 breast cyst fluid (BCF) samples were studied among 93 women with GCBD. Concentrations of melatonin, estrogen (17-beta-estradiol), dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-B1 and TGF-B2), sodium (Na), and potassium (K) were quantified in BCF samples, and human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) were treated with BCF in vitro.

Crustaceans possess blood cells (hemocytes) that mediate organismal defense and are analogous to vertebrate leukocytes. In order to more fully characterize these types of cells, hemocytes of the branchiopod crustacean, Artemia franciscana, were analyzed. The data indicate that Artemia have one type of hemocyte, ranging in morphology from compact and spherical to flat and spreading when examined in vitro.

Recent changes to the health services have led to an increased provision of clinical care in family planning clinics. While some women may only require contraceptive services, others may demand advice on a breadth of lifestyle issues, including diet and nutrition. Obesity affects 17% of women of childbearing age in Scotland and being overweight during pregnancy has significant health risks.

Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate, DMPA) when given as 150 mg by deep intramuscular injection every 12 calendar weeks (84 days+5 days), is a highly effective contraceptive with a very low failure rate comparable to modern copper IUDs and lower than many other methods. It should be available as a first line method to all who wish to make an informed choice about reversible methods of contraception. Pre-use counselling is essential to minimise the effect of menstrual change which occurs in most patients.

Microtubule arrangement is influenced by gamma-tubulin, a soluble protein of the eukaryotic cell cytosol and a component of microtubule-organizing centers. In this study, affinity purified antibodies to gamma-tubulin were prepared and their specificity demonstrated by immunostaining of Western blots and in competitive ELISAs. When employed to label mouse fibroblasts, one or two brightly stained dots appeared in each cell, a pattern characteristic of centrosomes.
