Few studies have evaluated genetic susceptibility related to diabetes and obesity as a risk factor for neural tube defects (NTDs). The authors investigated 23 single nucleotide polymorphisms among 9 genes (ADRB3, ENPP1, FTO, LEP, PPARG, PPARGC1A, SLC2A2, TCF7L2, and UCP2) associated with type 2 diabetes or obesity. Samples were obtained from 737 NTD case-parent triads included in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study during 1999-2007.

To extend previously published datasets on plant nuclear content and to characterize the DNA content of many species present in one region of North America, flow cytometry was used to estimate C-values of woody and herbaceous species collected in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA.
Methods: A total of 674 samples and vouchers were collected from locations across Wisconsin and Michigan, USA.
Background: The current staging system for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is controversial. To plan revisions of this system, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Staging Committee developed an international database. Initial analyses focus on patients managed surgically.

Wells containing TC bacteria were further tested for either fecal coliform or Escherichia coli (FC/E. coli) bacteria.

PARP-1 is activated by oxidative stress and causes energy depletion and cell dysfunction. Inhibition of this enzyme protects against excessive inflammation and recent studies have also implicated it in intracellular protein trafficking.

This body of research has firmly established a strong connection between the psychology of imagery and perception and has contributed a strong voice to the imagery debate. We then use the concept of embodiment to discuss additional avenues of inquiry at which Perky's work hinted.

The source of this north-is-up bias remains unknown, and there is no strong evidence to suggest that it is due to explicit strategy use. In four experiments, we attempt to further elucidate the source of this effect by testing whether it can be attributed to implicit associations between cardinal direction (north/south) and topography (mountainous/level terrain).

We examined how training associated with an invasive species citizen science program affected participants in these areas. We found no changes in science literacy or overall attitudes between tests administered just before and after a one-day training program, matching results from other studies.

Background: Although associations between maternal parity and birth defects have been observed previously, few studies have focused on the possibility that parity is an independent risk factor for birth defects. We investigated the relation between levels of parity and a range of birth defects, adjusting each defect group for the same covariates.
Methods: We included infants who had an estimated delivery date between 1997 and 2007 and participated in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a multisite case-control study.
Objective: To examine the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of referral to group art therapy plus standard care, compared with referral to an activity group plus standard care and standard care alone, among people with schizophrenia.
Design: A three-arm, parallel group, single-blind, pragmatic, randomised controlled trial. Participants were randomised via an independent and remote telephone randomisation service using permuted blocks, stratified by study centre.
Objectives: Selection criteria for radical surgery in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and related clinical trials remain controversial. The relative importance of nodal metastases and the need for pre-operative nodal staging are undetermined.
Methods: From a prospective database, we identified 212 patients with non-sarcomatoid MPM (160 epithelioid and 52 biphasic).

Introduction: Variability of drug response is an important consideration in clinical medicine. A major determinant of drug response variability is hepatic cytochrome P450 oxidase (CYP450)-mediated drug metabolism. Advances in genetics permits genotyping large numbers of patients to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) which may result in variant CYP450 enzyme expression and/or activity.

Study Design: The National Birth Defects Prevention Study (1997-2004) is a multicenter, population-based case-control study of birth defects (14,721 cases and 5437 control infants). Cases were categorized into 18 types of heart defects and 26 noncardiac birth defects.
Widespread environmental changes including climate change, selective harvesting and landscape alterations now greatly affect selection regimes for most organisms. How animals and plants can adapt to these altered environments via contemporary evolution is thus of strong interest. We discuss how to use genetic monitoring to study adaptive responses via repeated analysis of the same populations over time, distinguishing between phenotypic and molecular genetics approaches.

Recently, there has been significant interest in discovering new chemical pharmacophores in natural products to fulfil the vast demand for novel kinase inhibitors and address critical unmet medical needs with respect to signal transduction pathways. In this review, we summarize the history of several different classes of natural product-derived kinase inhibitors, discuss their kinome-wide target profiles and examine their structural binding modes based on available 3D X-ray structures.

These inhibitors are being widely used as pharmacological probes of mTOR-dependent biology. To determine the potency and specificity of these agents, we have undertaken a systematic kinome-wide effort to profile their selectivity and potency using chemical proteomics and assays for enzymatic activity, protein binding, and disruption of cellular signaling.

We tested the hypothesis that lung-sparing total pleurectomy (LSTP) can be as effective as EPP in locally advanced MPM with reduced risk.
Methods: We analysed prospective data on 165 patients (128 with epithelioid and 37 with biphasic MPM) with pT3 (n = 108) and pT4 (n = 57) tumours.

Background: Induction of hypothermia (a 4 °C decrease from baseline) improves outcomes in adult cardiac arrest and neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, and may benefit other conditions as well. Methods used to implement or prevent hypothermia typically require skin contact with blankets or pads or intravascular access with catheter devices. The study was to evaluate the potential to induce mild therapeutic hypothermia via an esophageal route in a porcine model.

Objective: This study analyzes whether plants with ethnomedical uses from Vietnam and Laos have a higher hit rate in bioassay testing than plants collected from a national park in Vietnam with the goal of maximizing taxonomic diversity ("random" collection).
Materials And Methods: All plants were extracted and subjected to bioassay in the same laboratories.
Context: An ethnobotany-based approach in the selection of raw plant materials to study was implemented.
Objective: To acquire raw plant materials using ethnobotanical field interviews as starting point to discover new bioactive compounds from medicinal plants of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
Methods: Using semi-structured field interviews with healers in the Lao PDR, plant samples were collected, extracted, and bio-assayed to detect bioactivity against cancer, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria.

The issue of sexually transmitted diseases is a socially sensitive one in Asian communities, with governments being criticized for not doing enough to reduce AIDS transmission, and the advertising of such issues potentially causing offense to people. This article surveys 630 people in China to determine their level of offense toward the advertising of condoms and STD prevention and analyzes the qualitative responses to how they would reduce the offensiveness of such advertising. The results found that generally women are more offended by the advertising of these products than men, and in terms of creative execution, women prefer implicit, prevention or effects messages, whereas men suggested a scientific message, or a focus on the creative strategy or media/location of the advertisement.
