Acute osteochondral injuries of the hip are rare in the absence of associated dislocation. A series of cases is presented in which these injuries were sustained after relatively minor trauma to the hip. Radiologic studies revealed evidence of mild hip dysplasia and, in one case, an osteochondral fracture of the right femoral head.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA scintigraphic pattern of increased uptake was observed in the pedicles of the affected segment and a triangular pattern of uptake in the sagittal projection of tomographic studies of pars fractures. It was hypothesised that these observations were specific for pars fractures. A retrospective study of 25 young athletes (age 9-16 years) with a variety of spinal disorders was undertaken.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA 50-year-old man with psoriatic arthropathy was examined for a painful mass in the left cubital fossa. The clinical findings indicated a tumor or infection. Computed tomographic scanning and bone scintigraphy also raised the possibility of a malignant lesion.

In these cages, most of the eggs are laid in the 25 cm wide nest, i.e.

The study comprised a total of 972 hens of two genotypes: Lohmann Selected Leghorn (LSL) and Hy-Line White. The birds were studied from 20 to 80 wk of age, and conventional four-hen cages were included as a reference.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) typically occurs concurrently with clubbing of the digits, with isolated HOA being reported only rarely. We report two patients with intra-thoracic malignancy in whom HOA, demonstrated on bone scintigraphy, developed in the absence of clubbing. We also report the novel observation of involvement of the metatarsal and metacarpal bones by HOA.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA 42-year-old woman, who had received a radiologic diagnosis of synovial osteochondromatosis many years before, was examined for a painful right hip and a large immobile mass in the right buttock. Findings of radiologic and scintigraphic imaging were consistent with synovial osteochondromatosis. The patient underwent arthrotomy and excision of the large mass and several smaller masses to control pain and to identify possible malignant change.

Introduction: Respiratory complications are common after arthroplasty, with pulmonary thromboembolic disease (PTE) and fat emboli being the most serious. A scintigraphic study was designed to assess the occurrence of both diseases. A prospective tomographic study of perfusion was performed within 24 h of arthroplasty.

Two cases of osteoarthritis of the knee are presented that illustrate the typical medial compartment pattern of scintigraphic uptake. In both cases the patients had significant medial joint pain. After high tibial osteotomy, the pattern of uptake was altered and paralleled the improvement in symptoms.

While leukocyte scintigraphy is accurate in detection of pedal osteomyelitis, there has been little data relating the technique to outcomes. We designed a trial to examine the prognostic value of sequential 99m Tc labeled leukocyte scans to establish the diagnosis of osteomyelitis and after three to four weeks of culture-guided antibiotic therapy. Twenty-three diabetic patients with proven pedal osteomyelitis (21/23) or persistent uptake (2/23) on the sequence of scans were studied.

43 subjects observed Poggendorff figures with transverse line segments at a constant distance while the parallels were positioned closer or farther apart. At closer distances, no illusion occurred; at farther distances, the illusion diminished. The illusion no longer occurred when the parallels were located beyond the outside end of the transverse lines.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFEmphysema is a common and debilitating disease that is the commonest cause of end-stage respiratory failure. Treatment is either by lung transplantation or by lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) that improves the biomechanics of respiration. Patient selection for LVRS hinges on the demonstration of heterogeneous disease, predominantly involving the upper lobes, as a good surgical outcome is most likely in these patients.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA unique scintigraphic appearance has been noted in uncomplicated hip prostheses which have the acetabular component inserted after under-reaming or where a cone-shaped cup is inserted. We hypothesized that the pattern of increased uptake around the superior and inferior third of the cup with relatively reduced uptake in the medial third is due to preferential loading of the rim of the cup. A prospective study of ten patients with uncomplicated hip prostheses supports the hypothesis.

It is adding to the spectrum of acute and chronic injuries that have traditionally been seen in elite or professional athletes. Because of its high sensitivity and lesion contrast, bone scintigraphy has traditionally played a key role in the detection of such injuries.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAn investigation of the complex boundaries between adjacent lobes and segments in human cadaveric lungs was undertaken to provide information for the later construction of a three-dimensional model of the segmental and subsegmental anatomy of the human lungs. This was performed by analyzing scanned cross-sections of the lungs after color-coded gelatin had been injected into segmental bronchi and the lungs embedded in gelatin and frozen. The resulting images provided information regarding the pattern of boundaries present between both lobes and segments.

We have developed a method for measuring tracheal mucus velocity by the dynamic study of a single point source of radioactivity deposited in the trachea by cricothyroid injection. Preliminary results suggest that patients with airways disease have very low tracheal mucus velocities (<2 mm x min(-1)).
