CRISPR–Cas (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-CRISPR-associated proteins) is a prokaryotic immune system that destroys foreign nucleic acids in a sequence-specific manner using Cas nucleases guided by short RNAs (crRNAs). Staphylococcus epidermidis harbours a Type III-A CRISPR–Cas system that encodes the Cas10–Csm interference complex and crRNAs that are subjected to multiple processing steps. The final step, called maturation, involves a concerted effort between Csm3, a ruler protein in Cas10–Csm that measures six-nucleotide increments, and the activity of a nuclease(s) that remains unknown.

The ability to map out electrostatic potentials in materials is critical for the development and the design of nanoscale electronic and spintronic devices in modern industry. Electron holography has been an important tool for revealing electric and magnetic field distributions in microelectronics and magnetic-based memory devices, however, its utility is hindered by several practical constraints, such as charging artifacts and limitations in sensitivity and in field of view. In this article, we report electron-beam-induced-current (EBIC) and secondary-electron voltage-contrast (SE-VC) with an aberration-corrected electron probe in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), as complementary techniques to electron holography, to measure electric fields and surface potentials, respectively.

Some patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy who respond to initial intravenous immunoglobulin require repeated courses over prolonged periods of time; however, evidence to guide dosage and interval of intravenous immunoglobulin during maintenance therapy is limited. Optimizing treatment requires assessment of underlying disease activity and clinical outcome. Electrophysiological measures of demyelination, and clinical measures using handgrip strength and walking velocity promise to be particularly informative.

Disinhibition of cortical excitatory cell gate information flow through and between cortical columns. The major contribution of Martinotti cells (MC) is providing dendritic inhibition to excitatory neurons and therefore they are a main component of disinhibitory connections. Introduction: Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are sensitive for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but a small proportion of patients with clinical CTS have normal NCS. This retrospective study was designed to assess the neuromuscular ultrasound findings in a group of CTS patients.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is used to investigate the electronic origin of orbital polarization in nickelate heterostructures taking LaTiO_{3}-LaNiO_{3}-3×(LaAlO_{3}), a system with exceptionally large polarization, as a model system. We find that heterostructuring generates only minor changes in the Ni 3d orbital energy levels, contradicting the often-invoked picture in which changes in orbital energy levels generate orbital polarization. Instead, O K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that orbital polarization is caused by an anisotropic reconstruction of the oxygen ligand hole states.

Major prehistoric forces, such as the climatic shifts of the Pleistocene, can remain visible in a species' population genetics. Inference of refuges via genetic tools is useful for conservation management as it can identify populations whose preservation may help retain a species' adaptive potential. Such investigation is needed for Australia's southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons), whose conservation status has recently deteriorated, and whose phylogeographic history during the Pleistocene may be atypical compared to other species.

Exposure to psychological stress is known to seriously disrupt the operation of the substantia nigra (SN) and may in fact initiate the loss of dopaminergic neurons within the SN. Bat guano is a relatively untapped reservoir of information, having great utility as a DNA source because it is often available at roosts even when bats are not and is an easy type of sample to collect from a difficult-to-study mammalian order. Recent advances from microbial community studies in primer design, sequencing, and analysis enable fast, accurate, and cost-effective species identification. The reaction of [Fe(TMP)(OClO)], where TMP is the dianion of tetramesitylporphyrin, with a combination of a strong -acceptor ligand and a -donating imidazole can lead to the preparation of mixed-ligand complexes [Fe(Porph)(4-CNPy)(L)] where L is imidazole itself or 1-acetylimidazole and 4-cyanopyridine is the strong acceptor ligand. The stability of the new mixed-ligand pair is the presumed result of synergic bonding between the two axial ligands. The molecular structure and other characterization of the new mixed axial ligand complex, [Fe(TMP)(4-CNPy)(HIm)]ClO is described.

The impact of the dietary protein level on the process of colonic mucosal inflammation and subsequent recovery remains largely unknown. In this study, we fed DSS-treated mice with either a normoproteic (NP) or a high-protein (HP) isocaloric diet from the beginning of the 5-day dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) treatment to 14 days later. Measurements of colitis indicators (colon weight:length ratio, myeloperoxidase activity, cytokine expressions) showed a similar level of colonic inflammation in both DSS groups during the colitis induction phase.
