Purpose: To evaluate the in vivo toxicity and efficacy of previously developed poly-(lactide-co-glycolide)-vancomycin-based microparticles (V-MPLs) for eventual use for endophthalmitis prophylaxis during cataract surgery.
Methods: The intraocular vancomycin concentration profile was evaluated after V-MPL injection into the anterior chamber of rabbit eyes. The toxicology of V-MPLs versus MPLs alone was tested by corneal cellular counting and retinal histology.

Purpose: To compare the in vitro bactericidal and anti-adhesion properties of vancomycin-based microparticles and lyophilized vancomycin and estimate their relevance to perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis and endophthalmitis prevention.
Setting: University research laboratory, Lyon, France.
Methods: The bactericidal and anti-adhesion properties of a newly designed drug-delivery system were assessed on Staphylococcus epidermidis clinical strain N890074 containing the intercellular adhesion locus ica.
The aim of the present work was to prepare microparticles containing vancomycin for intraocular injection. The primary objective was to guarantee continuous release and keep an intracameral drug concentration above the minimal inhibitory limit for at least 24h, needed in endophthalmitis prophylaxis after cataract surgery. Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) microparticles were prepared using the double emulsion (water-in-oil-in-water) solvent extraction/evaporation method.
