(açaí) fruit has approximately 15% pulp, which is partly edible and commercialized, and 85% seeds. Although açaí seeds are rich in catechins-polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor effects-almost 935,000 tons/year of seeds are discarded as industrial waste. Article Synopsis
  • Respiratory allergies, particularly asthma and rhinitis, affect about 20-30% of the global population, with the study focusing on specific IgE levels against airborne fungi in patients diagnosed with these conditions.
  • The study involved 158 asthmatic patients (many also with rhinitis/sinusitis) and 20 controls, using ELISA tests to evaluate IgE levels, revealing a significant presence of symptoms related to specific fungal allergens.
  • Results showed high seropositivity rates for anti-Penicillium (79.7%) and anti-Fusarium IgE (77.8%), indicating that identifying environmental fungi is crucial for diagnosing respiratory allergies.
