Article Synopsis
  • Trigger finger release (TFR) is a common hand surgery procedure with a high success rate, but some patients may need revision surgery (rTFR) and little is known about what factors lead to this.
  • A study analyzed data from over 46,000 patients who underwent TFR from 2015 to 2022 to identify demographic and health factors associated with the need for rTFR.
  • Results indicated that male sex, diabetes, and ischemic heart disease significantly increased the odds of requiring revision surgery, while hypothyroidism decreased these odds across all time frames.

Article Synopsis
  • Limb length discrepancy (LLD) is a common issue after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and can lead to patient dissatisfaction.
  • A study analyzed 162 preoperative pelvic radiographs using four landmarks to measure limb lengths, finding weak correlations and significant variation in LLD measurements.
  • The results suggest that current methods for measuring leg length in hip replacement surgery are unreliable and should be used cautiously in both clinical and research contexts.

The orthopedic surgery fellowship match process is associated with substantial stress and expense, yet the optimal number of interviews for fellowships to offer has not been evaluated. : We sought to evaluate the number of orthopedic surgery fellowship interviews given and construct a model to determine the appropriate number of interviews to offer based on specialty and program size. : We conducted a retrospective study of 6 orthopedic fellowship specialties; data were obtained from San Francisco Match and covered the 5-year period from 2014 to 2018.

Background: Orthopaedic surgeons rely on visual and tactile cues to guide performance in the operating room (OR). However, there is very little data on how sound changes during orthopaedic procedures and how surgeons incorporate audio feedback to guide performance. This study attempts to define meaningful changes in sound during vital aspects of total hip arthroplasty (THA) within the spectrum of human hearing.

A direct anterior approach (DAA) is a technique practiced by arthroplasty surgeons that can be technically challenging, most notably for inexperienced surgeons. The lateral femoral circumflex artery (LFCA) is a branch of the femoral artery that crosses the surgical field during DAA and is an important landmark for superficial surgical dissection. If the vessel is not identified, significant bleeding may occur, and visualization may be impaired.

Background: Achieving appropriate leg length after surgery remains a concern for surgeons performing total hip arthroplasty (THA). The focus of surgeons trying to equalize leg length has been primarily on positioning of the femoral implant. This study evaluates the impact of acetabular height on leg length and its impact on femoral component choices during THA.

Aims: The aim of this study was to analyze the true costs associated with preoperative CT scans performed for robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (RATKA) planning and to determine the value of a formal radiologist's report of these studies.

Methods: We reviewed 194 CT reports of 176 sequential patients who underwent primary RATKA by a single surgeon at a suburban teaching hospital. CT radiology reports were reviewed for the presence of incidental findings that might change the management of the patient.
