Background: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR), a known complication following total joint arthroplasty (TJA), remains inconsistent in its diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and risk factors. This study aims to quantify POUR rates, identify risk factors, and assess complications associated with catheterization in TJA.

Methods: A single-center cohort undergoing TJA between January 2015 and December 2022 was retrospectively reviewed.

Background: Pleural mesothelioma is a rare and incurable cancer, with complex physical and psychological symptoms. Despite recent advances in treatment, prognosis remains poor (average 8-15 months) with a lack of research on palliative and end-of-life care.

Aim: To examine markers suggestive of quality palliative and end-of-life care, including receipt of specialist palliative care, advance care planning, fewer unplanned hospital admissions at end-of-life.

Objectives: To describe maternal and perinatal outcomes in patients with BMI ≥30 kg/m by BMI class and gestational weight gain.

Methods: Retrospective review of singleton pregnancies with pre-pregnancy BMI ≥30 kg/m who received care at our institution between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2021. Patients were divided into three categories based on BMI (kg/m): Class I (BMI 30.

Accurate risk stratification in acute intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) is essential. Current prediction scores lack the ability to forecast impending clinical decline. The Pulmonary Embolism Progression (PEP) score aims to predict short-term clinical deterioration (respiratory failure or hemodynamic instability within 72 h) in patients with intermediate-risk PE.

Background: Grieving is a natural process, and many people adjust with support from family and friends. Around 40% of people would benefit from additional input. Online bereavement support interventions may increase access to support.

Article Synopsis
  • Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) have the potential to target and silence difficult disease-related genes, providing new ways to treat diseases.* -
  • While delivering siRNAs to the liver via N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) has proven effective, delivering siRNAs to other cell types remains a challenge.* -
  • Research shows that certain cellular mechanisms, including retrograde transport and lipid droplets, can enhance the effectiveness of siRNA delivery and gene silencing in both liver and non-liver cell types.*

Context: LGBTQIA+ people worldwide experience discrimination, violence, and stigma that lead to poor health outcomes. Policy plays a crucial role in ensuring health equity and safety for LGBTQIA+ communities. Given Lancet Commissions' substantial impact on health policy across domains, we aimed to determine how LGBTQIA+ communities and their care needs are incorporated throughout Lancet Commission reports and recommendations.

Background Electrical cardioversion (EC) is a procedure that restores normal sinus rhythm in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Data on post-EC outcomes relative to the success of inpatient EC is limited. Methods This is a retrospective study of patients admitted for AF who underwent inpatient EC from January 1, 2017, to January 1, 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the use of doxycycline injections as a treatment for persistent olecranon bursitis (OB) that didn’t respond to standard care, comparing it to surgical removal of the bursa.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 27 patients treated with doxycycline and 18 who underwent surgery over an 11-year period.
  • Results showed that doxycycline had a recurrence rate of 29.6% and high satisfaction levels (85.7%), while surgery had a lower recurrence rate of 16.7%, indicating that doxycycline may be a safe and effective non-surgical alternative for OB treatment.

  • The study examines HPV vaccine knowledge, barriers, and willingness to get vaccinated among women during the inpatient postpartum period, highlighting this time as a potential opportunity for vaccination.
  • Out of 147 surveyed participants, 39.46% were fully vaccinated against HPV, with a notable gap in vaccination rates among African American and Asian women.
  • Most unvaccinated women (52.9%) expressed willingness to get vaccinated during their hospital stay, with forgetting to complete the vaccine series identified as the main barrier to vaccination.

Introduction: LGBTQ+ people experience higher burdens of life-limiting illnesses, poorer health outcomes, and multilevel barriers to accessing palliative, end-of-life, and bereavement care. High quality evidence is needed to inform interventions to address these inequities, and inform inclusive practices and policies. Despite global initiatives to improve availability of peer-reviewed journal articles, the minority of research is open access (OA).

In vivo clearance mechanisms of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) encompass both target-mediated and target-independent processes. Two distinct determinants of overall mAb clearance largely separate of target-mediated influences are non-specific cellular endocytosis and subsequent pH-dependent mAb recycling mediated by the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), where inter-mAb variability in the efficiency of both processes is observed. Here, we implemented a functional cell-based FcRn recycling assay via Madin-Darby canine kidney type II cells stably co-transfected with human FcRn and its light chain β2-microglobulin.

Introduction: Parenting styles (PSs) and food-related parenting practices (FPPs) play a crucial role in shaping adolescent eating behavior. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the different PSs and FPPs of African-American families and the frequency of consumption of MyPlate food items by adolescents based on recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA).

Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design.

Background:  Paracentesis is currently performed by interventional radiologists (IR) rather than gastroenterologists/hepatologists or internists. In this model of care, there is usually no evaluation of patients' renal function or adjustment of their medications at the time of paracentesis. The objectives of this study were to analyze hospital utilization and cirrhosis complications within six months of index outpatient paracentesis by IR and to identify potential areas of improvement in care.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and impact of using the first-trimester ultrasound visit to identify and counsel women at increased risk of preeclampsia about the benefits of low-dose aspirin (LDA) for preventing preeclampsia. We also assessed patient-reported utilization of LDA, perceived risk for preeclampsia, and clinical outcomes.

Study Design: Women presenting for routine first-trimester nuchal-translucency (NT) ultrasounds were screened for clinical preeclampsia risks using a self-administered risk assessment.

Importance: Hospice care enhances quality of life for people with terminal illness and is most beneficial with longer length of stay (LOS). Most hospice research focuses on the Medicare-insured population. Little is known about hospice use for the racially and ethnically diverse, low-income Medicaid population.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in December 2019 and spread rapidly. The purpose of this study was to compare neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) following the original booster vaccine in convalescent and naive vaccinated individuals and in a third comparison group consisting of unvaccinated convalescent plasma donors.

Methods: We assessed NAbs before and 2 months after a booster vaccine in 68 adults who had completed the initial vaccine series for SARS-CoV-2.
