Retrospective evaluation of a novel ultrasound-based imaging analysis software for predicting radiofrequency ablation areas.

Objective: This study aimed to introduce and evaluate a novel software-based system, BioTrace, designed for real-time monitoring of thermal ablation tissue damage during image-guided radiofrequency ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Methods: BioTrace utilizes a proprietary algorithm to analyze the temporo-spatial behavior of thermal gas bubble activity during ablation, as seen in conventional B-mode ultrasound imaging. Its predictive accuracy was assessed by comparing the ablation zones it predicted with those annotated by radiologists using contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) 24 hours post-treatment, considered the gold standard.

Aim: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is regarded as a first-line treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at an early stage. When treated with RFA, tumor biopsy may not be performed due to the risk of neoplastic seeding. We previously revealed that the risk of neoplastic seeding is significantly reduced by performing biopsies after RFA.

We enrolled 1237 consecutive patients with treatment-naive C-HCC who underwent radical radiofrequency ablation between 1999 and 2019.

Association between psychotropic prescriptions and the total amount of psychotropics ingested during an intentional overdose: A single-center retrospective study.

Aim: To investigate the association between psychotropic prescriptions and the total amount of psychotropics ingested during a subsequent intentional overdose and to examine factors related to the number of psychotropic prescriptions.

Methods: The initial sample comprised 69 patients who were admitted to the emergency department of a general hospital in Japan following an intentional overdose via psychotropic medications. We performed retrospective hierarchical multiple regression analysis with the total amount of psychotropics ingested at the overdose as a dependent variable and factors related to deliberate self-harm or overdose identified in previous studies as independent variables.

Background And Aim: Prophylactic administration of antibiotics within 24 hours of surgery is recommended to reduce the risk of infection. We conducted a prospective study to compare the efficacy of single administration of antibiotics with a historical control of continuous administration of antibiotics for radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of malignant liver tumors.

Methods: Between February 1, 1999 and November 30, 2010, a total of 6,763 RFA treatments were performed in 2,355 patients, using a protocol with continuous administration of prophylactic antibiotics.

The hepatic vein (HV) waveform by Doppler ultrasound reflects the severity of liver fibrosis. We conducted a proof-of-concept study of a new method for quantifying the HV waveform. We calculated the coefficient of variation (CV) of the HV flow velocity and created a new index "q-HV" (quantified HV) and analyzed its performance for predicting histologic liver fibrosis in 114 patients with chronic liver disease.

Background: With the improvement in survival of hepatocellular carcinoma patients, extrahepatic metastases have become a more frequent complication. Methods: We enrolled patients with a history of successful radiofrequency ablation treatment for hepatitis C-related HCC who received antiviral therapy with DAAs (DAA group: 147 patients) or with interferon (IFN)-based therapy (IFN group: 156 patients).
