Aim: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the National Health Program in Japan ("Specific Health Check-ups and Specific Health Guidance") on diabetes prevention among working-age men with prediabetes.

Methods: This study used a regression discontinuity design, based on the program's criterion that the program starts at age 40 or older and that the intervention is provided only to prediabetic individuals with abdominal obesity, to assess the impact of the program on the diabetes incidence in a total of 49,848 men with prediabetes, aged 37-42 years.

Results: The National Health Program in which interventions were provided for individuals aged 40 years or over with both prediabetes and abdominal obesity was associated with a decrease in diabetes incidence rate equivalent to 10.

Background And Aim: Mesenteric malperfusion is a complication with a higher risk of in-hospital mortality because diagnosing mesenteric ischemia before necrotic change is difficult, and when it occurs, the patient's condition has worsened. Although it contradicts the previous consensus on central repair-first strategy, the revascularization-first strategy was found to be significantly associated with lower mortality rates. This study aimed to present our revascularization-first strategy and the postoperative results for acute aortic dissection involving mesenteric malperfusion.

Salicylic acid decarboxylase (Sdc) can produce salicylic acid from phenol; it was found in the yeast Trichosporon moniliiforme WU-0401 and was for the first time enzymatically characterized, with the sdc gene heterologously expressed. Sdc catalyzed both reactions: decarboxylation of salicylic acid to phenol and the carboxylation of phenol to form salicylic acid without any byproducts. Both reactions were detected without the addition of any cofactors and occurred even in the presence of oxygen, suggesting that this Sdc is reversible, nonoxidative, and oxygen insensitive.

Alkyl radicals generated by treatment of thiocarbamates of conformationally favorable 3-alkyl-3-arylpropan-1-ols with tris(trimethylsilyl)silane and AIBN efficiently undergo intramolecular ipso substitution of the methoxy group, yielding the corresponding cyclized products. In contrast, either conformationally favorable or flexible 1-arylalkan-3- or 4-ones easily cyclize into five- or six-membered condensed rings by treatment with SmI(2) via ketyl radical intermediates. The addition of HMPA as cosolvent dramatically changes the cyclization mode of the SmI(2)-induced reaction, and the para-cyclization products are exclusively formed.
