Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intense pulsed light (IPL) combined with meibomian gland expression (MGX) for the treatment of dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction associated with chronic Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Methods: This prospective noncomparative interventional study included 29 patients (58 eyes) who underwent 3 sessions of IPL and MGX at 2-week intervals. Subjective symptoms (ocular surface disease index score) and objective dry eye tests: matrix metalloproteinase 9, tear meniscus height, bulbar redness score, tear film lipid layer thickness (LLT), Schirmer I test, conjunctival and corneal staining, meibomian gland loss, MGX score [meibomian gland score (MGS)], and tear break-up time were assessed at the baseline and after 4, 8, and 12 weeks.

Introduction: Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial condition of the ocular surface (OS) characterized by loss of tear film homeostasis, ocular discomfort, and vision disturbances. Most available ocular lubricants target the aqueous deficiency of the tear, restoring only this layer, leaving the tear lipid stratum deficient, as occurs in most patients with evaporative DED. An innovative propylene glycol-hydroxypropyl guar enriched with a phospholipid nanoemulsion (PG-HPG-PH-N) is indicated to restore deficiencies in both the lipid and aqueous layers of the tear film, and its composition was designed to increase lubricant retention on the OS.

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors (HDACis) are arising as potent molecular targeted drugs, as HDACi treatment disrupts the SS oncoprotein complex, which includes HDACs, in addition to general HDACi effects. Background: Trabectedin binds covalently to the DNA minor groove and causes DNA to bend toward the main groove, then trabectedin regulates the transcription of the involved genes in cell proliferation or acts on the mononuclear phagocyte system in tumors, which contributes to its antitumor effects. The Earth's microbial biosphere extends from ambient to extreme environments, including deep-sea hydrothermal vents and subseafloor habitats. Despite efforts to understand the physiological adaptations of these microbes, our knowledge is limited due to the technological challenges associated with reproducing in situ high temperature (HT)-high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) conditions and sampling HT-HHP cultures. In the present study, we developed a new high temperature and pressure (HTP) incubation system that enabled the maintenance of HT-HHP conditions while sampling incubation medium and mostly eliminated non-biological reactions, including hydrogen generation or the leakage of small gaseous molecules.

We determined the electrical resistivity of liquid Fe to 135 GPa and 6680 K using a four-probe method in a diamond-anvil cell combined with two novel techniques: (i) enclosing a molten Fe in a sapphire capsule, and (ii) millisecond time-resolved simultaneous measurements of the resistance, x-ray diffraction, and temperature of instantaneously melted Fe. Our results show the minimal temperature dependence of the resistivity of liquid Fe and its anomalous resistivity decrease around 50 GPa, likely associated with a gradual magnetic transition, both in agreement with previous ab initio calculations.

We formed an international research collaboration that included Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Thailand, Taiwan, the UK, and the US (682 patients from 13 hospitals between 2005 and 2020), to better evaluate the role of race, ethnicity, and other risk factors in the pathophysiology of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Ophthalmologists often see SJS/TEN patients with severe ocular complications (SOC; frequency 50% SJS/TEN patients) when the patients are referred to them in the chronic stage after the acute stage has passed. Global data were collected using a Clinical Report Form, capturing pre-onset factors, as well as acute and chronic ocular findings.
