In spite of the importance of anisotropic circular dichroism, in practice, it is difficult to get rid of the artifacts that arise from the imperfection of the circular polarization. Undesirable linear dichroism, interference of two orthogonal polarization states, and linear birefringence prevent us from making accurate measurements. We propose a theoretical method for evaluating the contributions of the first two, which are thought to be the main artifacts when specimens are not thick enough.

Glutathione supplementation to semen extender improves the quality of frozen-thawed canine spermatozoa for transcervical insemination.

Identification of coexistence of DNA methylation and H3K27me3 specifically in cancer cells as a promising target for epigenetic therapy.

Alterations of epigenetic modifications are promising targets for cancer therapy, and several epigenetic drugs are now being clinically utilized. At the same time, individual epigenetic modifications have physiological functions in normal cells, and cancer cell specificity is considered difficult to achieve using a drug against a single epigenetic modification. To overcome this limitation, a combination of epigenetic modifications specifically or preferentially present in cancer cells is a candidate target.

Frequent involvement of chromatin remodeler alterations in gastric field cancerization.

A field for cancerization, or a field defect, is formed by the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations in normal-appearing tissues, and is involved in various cancers, especially multiple cancers. Epigenetic alterations are frequently present in chronic inflammation-exposed tissues, but information on individual genes involved in the formation of a field defect is still fragmental. Here, using non-cancerous gastric tissues of cancer patients, we isolated 16 aberrantly methylated genes, and identified chromatin remodelers ACTL6B and SMARCA1 as novel genes frequently methylated in non-cancerous tissues.

The panel created a sample screening tool, specifically for use in combination with the NCCN Guidelines for Survivorship, to guide providers to topics that require more in-depth assessment.

A 61-year-old woman was diagnosed in June 2011 as having immunoglobulin G (IgG) ĸ-type multiple myeloma (MM), stage II, according to the International Staging System (ISS). Chromosome analysis showed a complex karyotype, including t(11;14) and del 13q. Analysis of the cell surface markers revealed that the cells were positive for mature plasma cell-1 (MPC-1), and negative for cluster of differentiation (CD) 45 and CD49e, suggestive of an intermediate level of maturity of the cells.

A 70-year-old man presented to us with the chief complaints of a generalized rash and a mass in the right clavicular region that he first noticed in the year 2012. Biopsy of the mass led to the diagnosis of cutaneous nodular mass-type adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) in March 2013. Phototherapy was started, and the symptoms improved temporarily.

A 90-year-old man presented with subcutaneous ecchymoses. He had been under treatment with dabigatran etexilate methanesulfonate (DEM). Prolonged APTT and decreased PT was developed 2 months after the start of DEM, more prolonged 6 months later.

A 78-year-old man was diagnosed as having advanced symptomatic IgG multiple myeloma in June 2008. Melphalan-prednisolone therapy was effective, however, relapse occurred in January 2011 after 21 courses of melphalan-prednisolone therapy. Addition of bortezomib and dexamethasone led to partial remission, but the treatment needed to be discontinued due to autonomic dysfunction.

A 50-year-old woman who presented with a mass in the thyroid gland was diagnosed as having diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) by biopsy in August 2011. The tumor had a complex chromosomal karyotype, including 8q24 (C-MYC) and 18q21(BCL-2), and fluorescence in situ hybridization confirmed split signals of C-MYC and BCL-2. BCL-2/IgH and C-MYC/IgH fusion signals were also observed.

Targeting JAK1/STAT3 signaling suppresses tumor progression and metastasis in a peritoneal model of human ovarian cancer.

JAK/STAT3 is one of the major signaling pathways that is aberrantly activated in ovarian cancer and associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis in patients with ovarian cancer. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic potential of targeting JAK/STAT3 signaling in ovarian cancer using a peritoneal dissemination mouse model. We developed this mouse model by injecting a metastatic human ovarian cancer cell line, SKOV3-M-Luc, into the peritoneal cavity of immunodeficient mice.

Unusual bleeding from hepaticojejunostomy controlled by adult variable stiffness colonoscopy: report of a case and literature review.

We herein present a case of a 59-year-old man who had undergone pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy with regional lymph node dissection prior to episodes of melena. Series of conventional endoscopic investigations failed to identify the bleeding source. Enhanced computed tomography scan revealed complete obstruction of the main portal vein with numerous collateral veins running towards the hepatic hilus.

These guidelines provide information about travel and gardening precautions and safe pet care/avoidance of zoonosis, and include detailed recommendations regarding vaccinations that should be considered and encouraged in cancer and transplant survivors.

Coexistence effect of UVA absorbers to increase their solubility and stability of supersaturation.

Objective: Sunscreens containing UVA absorbers in high concentrations are expected to be developed, since recent studies have suggested the possibility of involvement of UVA ray in skin cancer and early skin aging. Solubility and stability of supersaturation of UVA absorbers in UVB absorber were determined in the absence and the presence of cosmetic oil. Coexistence effect of UVA absorbers was analyzed to dissolve them in high concentrations.

Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma with pontine involvement successfully treated with R-CHOP therapy and intrathecal administration: a case report and review of literature.

A 46-year-old man developed a fever and cough, and computed tomography showed multiple, nodular infiltrative shadows in lungs. He was diagnosed as having intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL). Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI, T2W1) showed an abnormal signal area in the pons, which was IVLBCL involvement.

A case of recurrent autoimmune hemolytic anemia during remission associated with acute pure red cell aplasia and hemophagocytic syndrome due to human parvovirus B19 infection successfully treated by steroid pulse therapy with a review of the literature.

The patient was a 47-year-old man diagnosed as having autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) in April 2011. He also had a congenital chromosomal abnormality, a balanced translocation. Treatment with prednisolone (PSL) 60 mg/day resulted in resolution of the AIHA, and the treatment was completed in November 2011.
