Introduction: Apathy is a frequent and debilitating condition among subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) survivors. Few studies have evaluated apathy in SAH, and none have examined the course of the condition, predictors of persistent apathy, or its impact on functional outcomes. The proposed study will examine, for the first time, the 12-month course of apathy and its impact on functional outcomes in the largest cohort of SAH survivors to date.

Introduction: Structural and functional abnormalities in the cortical-striatal network (CSN) are hypothesised to play a key role in the pathogenesis of neurological disease-associated fatigue. Some small-scale functional MRI (fMRI) studies have suggested that poststroke fatigue (PSF) is related to focal functional connectivity (FC) changes. To date, there has been no published large-scale fMRI study on PSF.

Article Synopsis
  • Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) is common among stroke survivors and can significantly impede their recovery, with current treatments often proving ineffective.
  • This study aims to evaluate the impact of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on alleviating fatigue in stroke patients, involving 156 participants in a double-blind randomized control trial.
  • The primary measure of success will be changes in fatigue severity assessed using a modified scale at various points during and after treatment, comparing results between an active tDCS group and a control group receiving sham treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzes the prescription patterns of mood stabilizers, primarily used for bipolar disorder, across 10 Asian countries and highlights their use in treating other psychiatric conditions.
  • It found that more than half of the patients had schizophrenia or similar disorders, and symptoms like irritability and aggression were common targets for treatment.
  • The results suggest that while mood stabilizers are frequently used off-label for various psychiatric diagnoses, the effectiveness and justification of this practice need further research.

Background Persistent sensorimotor impairments after stroke can negatively impact quality of life. The hippocampus is vulnerable to poststroke secondary degeneration and is involved in sensorimotor behavior but has not been widely studied within the context of poststroke upper-limb sensorimotor impairment. We investigated associations between non-lesioned hippocampal volume and upper limb sensorimotor impairment in people with chronic stroke, hypothesizing that smaller ipsilesional hippocampal volumes would be associated with greater sensorimotor impairment.
