Incidence and outcomes of acute kidney injury in extremely-low-birth-weight infants.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common event in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), especially in extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants. This cohort study investigated the incidence of and risk factors for AKI in ELBW infants and their overall survival at the postmenstrual age (PMA) of 36 weeks.

Methods: All ELBW infants admitted to our NICU between January 2010 and December 2013 were enrolled.

Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus necrotizing pneumonia in a healthy neonate.

The number of cases of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) pneumonia has increased since the late 1990s, with skin and soft tissue infections predominant among neonates. Herein, we present a rare case of CA-MRSA necrotizing pneumonia with empyema following respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in a healthy neonate. Despite prompt vancomycin treatment, the disease worsened and finally we had to perform pneumonectomy.

Prevalence and pathogen distribution of neonatal sepsis among very-low-birth-weight infants.

Background: Neonatal sepsis contributes to great mortality and morbidity among very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants. Prevalence and pathogen distribution of sepsis in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) vary with time and geographic location. Such information serves as a guide for selection of empirical antibiotics coverage.
