Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and safety of a Chinese herbal formula, Er-Xian decoction (EXD), in the treatment of menopausal symptoms among Hong Kong perimenopausal women.

Methods: A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial was conducted for 12 weeks among 108 Hong Kong perimenopausal women who reported Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) total scores of 28 or higher. Posttreatment follow-up was performed 3 months after the intervention.

This study was conducted to determine whether a particular Chinese medicinal preparation is effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms. Chinese women with menopausal symptoms were recruited to receive treatment for 3 months followed by 3 months without treatment. The severity of menopausal symptoms and serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol levels were assessed at baseline, 3 and 6 months.
