Alterations in systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels associated with combined oral contraceptive (OC) and alcohol use were investigated in white women 20-49 years of age from 10 North American Lipid Research Clinics study populations. OC users had systolic pressures 2-3 mm Hg higher than non-users, but no difference was noted for diastolic pressures. Among non-OC users, both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were positively associated with reported alcohol consumption, though participants reporting no alcohol use had blood pressures slightly higher than those reporting minimal intake.

In a study of white adults from 10 North American Lipid Research Clinics populations, plasma lipid and lipoprotein levels in benzodiazepine (diazepam, chlordiazepoxide, flurazepam) users were compared to both the entire population of non-users and matched control non-users. Significantly higher plasma triglyceride and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and by one method of analysis, lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were noted in male benzodiazepine users. No significant differences were noted in total plasma cholesterol or low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.

In 18 cases with primary subclavian-axillary vein thrombosis fibrinolytic therapy was performed with urokinase in combination with heparin. The thrombolytic efficacy clearly depended on the thrombus age and the dose of urokinase applied. Under treatment with a median initial maintenance dosage of urokinase of 1,000-2,000 IU/kg/h (loading dose 150,000-250,000 IU urokinase) in combination with heparin (15-17 U kg/h) in mine of 11 patients (82%) with recently developed (8 days or less) thrombosis, a nearly complete deobliteration of the venous system was observed.

Unlabelled: Effects of gender, sex hormone use, and age on lipoproteins composition have been evaluated in 603 Caucasian subjects, ages 20-59, randomly selected from employees participating in the Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company Health Survey. Lipoprotein composition in this analysis is defined as the cholesterol to triglyceride (C/TG) ratio in each lipoprotein fraction. The lipoprotein C/TG ratio is inversely related to the lipoprotein triglyceride concentrations in VLDL, LDL and HDL; the ratio falling in each instance as lipoprotein triglyceride concentration increases.

Thrombosis of the basilar artery occurred in a 27-year-old woman after physical exercise (bowling). She became deeply unconscious without change so that four days after onset urokinase was administered. The neurological status than markedly improved, with partial regression of the paresis and the cranial nerve deficits, and she became responsive again.

This report describes the distribution of lipoprotein triglyceride and lipoprotein cholesterol in employees of the Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company. Means, medians, and selected percentiles are presented for very low, low, and high density lipoproteins (VLDL, LDL, and HDL, respectively) in 606 randomly selected white subjects aged 20-59. Results are specific for age decade, sex, and female sex hormone usage.

The influence of H1 and H5 histones proteins upon the accessibility of ethidium bromide into chromatin is studied by steady-state fluorescence anisotropy in the range of r-values ([Dye]/[Phosphate]) smaller than 0.01. This corresponds to the very strong binding process.

The fluorescence anisotropy decays of the chromatin ethidium complexes have been measured in solutions in which the dye was bound to the high affinity sites of the nucleosome DNA. Energy transfers between chromatin-bound ethidium molecules cause an increase of naked DNA-ethidium complexes. This result implies that the high affinity sites are clustered on a short nucleosomal DNA segment.

Although atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of death in insulin-dependent diabetics, plasma levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (an independent "negative" risk factor for ASCVD) have been reported to be normal or high. To test whether alterations in HDL composition might increase potential risk of insulin-dependent diabetics to ASCVD, their major constituent apolipoproteins, A-I and A-II, were measured and compared with levels in controls. HDL cholesterol levels were slightly higher (P = NS) in diabetics than in controls.

Echotomography and a caryotype were carried out on the liquor and at an interval of one week between the two, two series of hormone levels were also carried out on the liquor and on the peripheral venous blood of a molar triploid pregnancy diagnosed clinically. These results have been compared with those that are known to occur in hydatidiform mole, and in other case histories that have been published of embryonic mole. The histological appearance of the fetal gonads resembles that found in Klinefelter's syndrome.

From the 10 North American study populations of the Lipid Research Clinics Program, mean levels of plasma high-density (HDL) cholesterol were contrasted between users of eight categories of prescribed medications and a control group of nonusers of those categories matched for age, sex, study population and ponderosity. Women taking propranolol had a mean HDL cholesterol level 12 mg/dl lower than nonusers (p < 0.05).

Vaginal smear cytology and hormonal tests were conducted in eleven patients in the natural menopause, before and after treatment with one capsule (100 mg) daily of veralipride alone for 20 days. Maturation of the vaginal epithelial cells unrelated to the degree of post-menopausal atrophy present was observed, without modification in plasma levels of gonadotropic LH, FSH and ovarian E2, E3 levels.

A group of 78 women with sudden flushes and associated disorders (pruritus vulvae, headache, anxiety, instability, depression, libido disturbances) related to the menopause were treated with one or two capsules of veralipride daily for 20 days. Excellent or good results were obtained in 54 of the 69 patients (78 p. cent) with sudden flushes, and 29 of the 57 cases (51 p.

We studied the effect of storage time and conditions on the measurement of apolipoprotein A-I and A-II by radial immunodiffusion. Purified A-I and A-II standards were stable for at least 6 months before any change in immunoreactivity was detected if stored at 4 degrees C at concentrations of 0.06-0.

The available data have been examined to determine if plasma lipids or lipoproteins are altered in pregnant subjects with adult-onset (type II) diabetes, gestational diabetes, or the hyperglycemic extreme of a randomly selected group of pregnant women attending a prepaid health plan. In each of these groups, a trend is observed toward an increase in total plasma and very low density lipoprotein triglycerides and a decrease in high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. These observations indicate that measurements of plasma triglyceride and HDL cholesterol may be valuable in identifying and quantifying the metabolic abnormality in gestational diabetes and in prognosticating fetal outcome.

The high density lipoprotein HDL) response of 14 hyperlipidemic subjects to four hypolipidemic agents was studied through serial measurement of HDL cholesterol and apolipoproteins A-I and A-II before and during 3 months each (separated by 2 months off drug) of clofibrate (2 g/day, n = 14), colestipol (20 g/day, n = 12), para-amino salicylic acid--ascorbate (PAS-C, 6--8 g/day, n = 14) taken in random sequence and oxandrolone (7.5 mg/day, n = 11) as the final drug. The maximal effect of each drug appeared by the first monthly evaluation, and A-1, A-II and HDL cholesterol levels returned to pretreatment levels by one month after discontinuation of each agent.

A method of fluorescence anisotropy decay analysis is described in this work. The transient anisotropy r(ex)(t) measured in a photocounting pulsefluorimeter is fitted by a non linear least square procedure to the ratio of convolutions of the apparatus response function g(t) by sums of appropriate exponential functions. This method takes rigorously into account the apparatus response function and is applicable to any shape of the later as well as to any values of fluorescence decay times and correlation times.

In incubation experiments with isolated glomeruli, an increased synthesis of protein and basement membranes was detected in diabetic rats compared to metabolically healthy controls. Different glucose concentrations in the incubation medium and insulin did not influence protein and basement membrane synthesis of nondiabetic glomeruli. On the other hand, in diabetic glomeruli the synthetic activity depends on glucose concentration.
