Wear particle reaction is present in every arthroplasty. Sometimes, this reaction may lead to formation of large pseudotumors. As illustrated in this case, the volume of the reaction may be out of proportion to the volume of the wear scar.

Rationale And Objective: The visualization of soft tissues, like the meniscus, through X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), requires the use of contrast agents (CAs). While other studies have investigated CA diffusion in fibrocartilagineous tissues, this work aimed to optimize iodine staining protocols for meniscal tissue that improve their visualization by micro-CT. Specific objectives included evaluating the diffusion of CAs within meniscal samples over time, assessing volume changes due to staining, and identifying the iodine ions absorbed by the tissue.

Article Synopsis
  • Systemic antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) is crucial in preventing infections after joint surgeries, but there's disagreement on how long and how much should be given.
  • Recent studies indicate that extending SAP for less than 24 hours after surgery could lead to better outcomes than a single dose.
  • Researchers advocate for more thorough recording of SAP practices in national registries to improve understanding and guidance on optimal antibiotic use in arthroplasty.

Aims: Highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) greatly reduces wear in total hip arthroplasty, compared to conventional polyethylene (CPE). Cross-linking is commonly achieved by irradiation. This study aimed to compare the degree of cross-linking and in vitro wear rates across a cohort of retrieved and unused polyethylene cups/liners from various brands.

The properties of correlated electron materials are often intricately linked to Van Hove singularities (VHS) in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. The class of these VHS is of great importance, with higher-order ones-with power-law divergence in the density of states-leaving frequently distinct signatures in physical properties. We use a new theoretical method to detect and analyse higher-order VHS (HOVHS) in two-dimensional materials and apply it to the electronic structure of the surface layer of SrRuO.

Purpose: Ischemia reperfusion injury represents a significant yet difficult to assess risk factor for short- and long-term graft impairment in human liver transplantation (LT). As a non-invasive, non-ionizing tool, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is capable of correlating optical properties with organ microperfusion. Hence, we here performed a study of human liver allografts assessed by HSI for microperfusion and prediction of initial graft function.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 300 intermittent countermovement jumps (CMJs) on the mechanical power distribution at the joints of the lower limbs and the influence of the upper body to explain vertical jump performance.

Methods: Fifteen male sport students (age 24.5 ± 2.

Doping of a Mott insulator gives rise to a wide variety of exotic emergent states, from high-temperature superconductivity to charge, spin, and orbital orders. The physics underpinning their evolution is, however, poorly understood. A major challenge is the chemical complexity associated with traditional routes to doping.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared low-load blood-flow-restriction resistance training (LL-BFR-RT) to low-load resistance training (LL-RT) and high-load resistance training (HL-RT) to examine their effects on metabolism and electrolyte levels in healthy men.
  • Participants performed knee-extensor exercises, with LL-BFR-RT showing a lower total workload than both LL-RT and HL-RT, but pain perception remained similar across all exercise types.
  • The results indicated no significant differences in metabolic and ionic responses among the training methods, suggesting that LL-BFR-RT reduces time to muscle failure without unique physiological effects.

The use of metal-on-metal bearing couples in total hip arthroplasty can lead to an increased release of metal ions, particularly cobalt and chromium over time. This can lead to local and systemic metallosis, which has cytotoxic, genotoxic, and immunotoxic effects and can cause a host of secondary disorders. We describe the case of a 37-year-old female patient that was diagnosed with warm-antibody autoimmune hemolytic anemia (WAIHA) one and a half years after bilateral large-diameter head metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty.

The transition-metal chalcogenides include some of the most important and ubiquitous families of 2D materials. They host an exceptional variety of electronic and collective states, which can in principle be readily tuned by combining different compounds in van der Waals heterostructures. Achieving this, however, presents a significant materials challenge.

Astrocytes play an essential role in regulating synaptic transmission. This study describes a novel form of modulation of excitatory synaptic transmission in the mouse hippocampus by astrocytic G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). We have previously described astrocytic glutamate release via protease-activated receptor-1 (PAR1) activation, although the regulatory mechanisms for this are complex.

The use of highly crosslinked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (XLPE) has significantly reduced the volumetric wear of acetabular liners, thereby reducing the incidence of osteolysis. However, contemporary components tend to generate smaller wear particles, which can no longer be identified using conventional histology. This technical limitation can result in imprecise diagnosis.

Three-dimensional information is essential for a proper understanding of the healing potential of the menisci and their overall role in the knee joint. However, to date, the study of meniscal vascularity has relied primarily on two-dimensional imaging techniques. Here we present a method to elucidate the intricate 3D meniscal vascular network, revealing its spatial arrangement, connectivity and density.

The study estimated lower and upper extremity contributions to whole-body front crawl swimming using semi-tethered load-velocity profiling. Nine female and 11 male (inter)national-level swimmers performed 20 m semi-tethered sprints, each with five progressive loads for lower (leg kicking), upper (arm stroke), and whole-body front crawl movements. The theoretical maximal speed (v) and load (L), and active drag (D) were expressed as a percentage of the sum of both extremities for the movements of each extremity to calculate their contributions.

We present a case with bilateral hematogenous hip periprosthetic joint infection with Enterococci which could be treated successfully with implant retention despite chronification and partial loosening. A debridement and replacement of the modular components was carried out with replacement of a loose acetabular cup on the right side. Considering poor local infection control, antibiotic treatment was enhanced by local application of vancomycin.

Anti-viral surface coatings are under development to prevent viral fomite transmission from high-traffic touch surfaces in public spaces. Copper's anti-viral properties have been widely documented, but the anti-viral mechanism of copper surfaces is not fully understood. We screened a series of metal and metal oxide surfaces for anti-viral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Blood-Flow-Restriction (BFR) training provides the ability to achieve hypertrophy effects even though only light mechanical loads are applied. However, its impact on venous pressures and function are still unknown. Therefore, the present study investigates the influence of BFR-training on intravascular venous pressure and venous function in comparison to control exercises with low or high mechanical loads.

The neurobiological mechanisms that regulate the appetite-stimulatory properties of cannabis sativa are unresolved. This work examined the hypothesis that cannabinoid-1 receptor (CB1R) expressing neurons in the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) regulate increased appetite following cannabis vapor inhalation. Here we utilized a paradigm where vaporized cannabis plant matter was administered passively to rodents.

Manipulating the spin state of thin layers of superconducting material is a promising route to generate dissipationless spin currents in spintronic devices. Approaches typically focus on using thin ferromagnetic elements to perturb the spin state of the superconducting condensate to create spin-triplet correlations. We have investigated simple structures that generate spin-triplet correlations without using ferromagnetic elements.
