When using the reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) technique for quantitative assessment of microRNA (miRNA) expression, normalizing data using a stable endogenous gene is essential; however, no universally adequate reference gene exists. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine, via the RNA-Seq technique, the most adequate endogenous normalizer for the expression assessment of plasma miRNAs in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Two massive sequencing procedures were performed (a) to identify differentially expressed miRNAs between patients with COVID-19 and healthy volunteers (n = 12), and (b) to identify differentially expressed miRNAs between patients with severe COVID-19 and those with mild COVID-19 (n = 8).

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) presents management challenges due to its high recurrence rate and a complex tumor microenvironment (TME). This study investigated the effects of OncoTherad® (MRB-CFI1) nanoimmunotherapy on the TME of BCG-unresponsive NMIBC, focusing on alterations in monoamine oxidases (MAO-A and MAO-B) and immune markers: CD163, FOXP3, CD8, and CX3CR1. A comparative analysis of immunoreactivities was made before and after OncoTherad® treatment and an immune score (IS) was established to evaluate the correlation between immunological changes and clinical outcomes.

Mast cell tumors (MCTs) are the most common malignant cutaneous tumors in dogs, and they present extremely variable biological behavior. The interaction between RANK, RANK-L, and immune checkpoints is frequently detected in the tumor microenvironment, and, together, they participate in every stage of cancer development. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize the molecular profiles of PD-L1, CTLA-4, RANK/RANK-L signaling pathway, and IFN-γ in primary tumors and lymph node metastases.

The aims of this study were to characterize and to compare the structural alterations of collagen and elastic fibers in the abdominal stretch marks of patients submitted to intralesional and per quadrant (region close to stretch marks) Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, as well as, to establish the possible mechanisms of action of this treatment involving toll-like receptors (TLRs) signaling pathways and growth factors. Incisional biopsies were collected from abdominal stretch marks with a 2 mm diameter punch in female patients, at the beginning of treatment, after 6 and 12 weeks of treatment, and submitted to morphological analyzes of elastic and collagen fibers, and immunohistochemistry for TLRs signaling pathways and growth factors. Our results demonstrated PRP per quadrant treatment was most effective in reducing the area of the abdominal stretch marks, with consequent stimulation of the synthesis and remodeling of collagen and elastic fibers.

Intoduction: Bladder cancer is the second most common urinary tract cancer. Above 70% of the occurrence of bladder cancer is superficial (pTis, pTa, and pT1), non-muscle invasive tumor (NMIBC), and the incidence of invasive disease is occasional. Treatments for NMIBC consist of transurethral resection (TUR) and subsequently intravesical immunotherapy with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), intending to prevent tumor progression and decrease recurrence.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2), was identified in December, 2019 in Wuhan, China. Since then, it has continued to spread rapidly in numerous countries, while the search for effective therapeutic options persists. Coronaviruses, including SARS‑CoV‑2, are known to suppress and evade the antiviral responses of the host organism mediated by interferon (IFN), a family of cytokines that plays an important role in antiviral defenses associated with innate immunity, and has been used therapeutically for chronic viral diseases and cancer.

Trypanosomatid-caused conditions (African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, and leishmaniasis) are neglected tropical infectious diseases that mainly affect socioeconomically vulnerable populations. The available therapeutics display substantial limitations, among them limited efficacy, safety issues, drug resistance, and, in some cases, inconvenient routes of administration, which made the scenarios with insufficient health infrastructure settings inconvenient. Pharmaceutical nanocarriers may provide solutions to some of these obstacles, improving the efficacy-safety balance and tolerability to therapeutic interventions.
