Modelling arts professionals' wellbeing and career intentions within the context of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial effect on the creative and cultural industries in the United Kingdom (UK), as seen in our first snapshot of the HEartS Professional Survey (April-June 2020, Phase 1, N = 358). By analysing data collected one year later (April-May 2021, Phase 2, N = 685), the aims of the current study are to trace the contributors to (1) arts professionals' mental and social wellbeing and (2) their expectations of staying in the arts. Findings show that artists continued to experience challenges in terms of finances, and mental and social wellbeing.

Online songwriting reduces loneliness and postnatal depression and enhances social connectedness in women with young babies: randomised controlled trial.

Objective: Loneliness is a public health challenge associated with postnatal depression (PND). This study developed and tested an online songwriting intervention, with the aim of reducing loneliness and symptoms of PND and enhancing social connectedness among women with young babies.

The future of the cultural workforce: Perspectives from early career arts professionals on the challenges and future of the cultural industries in the context of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the arts sector, disrupting livelihoods and professional networks and accentuating the instability that is common for creative workers. Gaps in support for grassroots organisations and freelance workers have highlighted structural inequalities within the industry, and the significant challenges for individual workers in the early stages of their career. Yet, the pandemic has also emphasised the importance of the arts as a community resource and its role in supporting wellbeing and togetherness.

Effects of violent media content: Evidence from the rise of the UFC.

We document the effect of violent media on crime. Specifically, we evaluate the effects of The Ultimate Fighter, a hit TV show that features fighters competing in violent mixed martial arts and which brought Ultimate Fighting Championship into the mainstream. We estimate the effect of exposure to the show's earliest episodes using panel data from police agencies across the United States and a strategy that uses network ratings prior to the show's premier as an instrumental variable.

Pain Characteristics, Fear-avoidance Variables, and Pelvic Floor Function as Predictors of Treatment Response to Physical Therapy in Women With Provoked Vestibulodynia.

Objective: The aim was to investigate whether pretreatment pain characteristics, psychological variables, and pelvic floor muscle (PFM) function predict the response to physical therapy (PT) in women with provoked vestibulodynia (PVD).

Materials And Methods: One hundred-five women diagnosed with PVD underwent 10 weekly sessions of individual PT comprising education, PFM exercises with biofeedback, manual therapy, and dilators. Treatment outcomes were evaluated at pretreatment, post-treatment, and 6-month follow-up and included pain intensity (numerical rating scale 0 to 10) and sexual function (Female Sexual Function Scale).

Transcranial direct current stimulation for provoked vestibulodynia: What roles do psychosexual factors play in treatment response?

There is growing evidence that provoked vestibulodynia (PVD), a frequent and debilitating condition, is characterized by central sensitization. This study aimed to examine predictive factors of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) efficacy in this chronic pain population. Exploratory analysis derived from a randomized controlled trial was performed to assess predictors of pain reduction among 39 women with PVD who received 10 daily sessions of either active or sham tDCS.

Rapid and inexpensive preparation of genome-wide nucleosome footprints from model and non-model organisms.

MNase-seq (micrococcal nuclease sequencing) is used to map nucleosome positions in eukaryotic genomes to study the relationship between chromatin structure and DNA-dependent processes. Current protocols require at least two days to isolate nucleosome-protected DNA fragments. We have developed a streamlined protocol for and other fungi which takes only three hours.

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is a critical innate immune protein that activates inflammation in response to extracellular cues. Much of the work to understand how the protein works in humans has been done using mouse models. Although human and mouse TLR4 have many shared features, they have also diverged significantly since their last common ancestor, acquiring 277 sequence differences.

The Evaluation Simulator: A New Approach to Training Music Performance Assessment.

A growing body of work has examined the act of evaluating the quality of a musical performance. This article considers the domain of training evaluative skills in musicians, presenting assessment as a form of performance to be taught and demonstrating a gap in opportunities for trainees to develop evaluative skills within the heightened environments of live assessment scenarios. To address these needs, the concepts of Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs) and distributed simulation are described, highlighting their use in training and research in other performance domains.

Automatic Assessment of Tone Quality in Violin Music Performance.

The automatic assessment of music performance has become an area of increasing interest due to the growing number of technology-enhanced music learning systems. In most of these systems, the assessment of musical performance is based on pitch and onset accuracy, but very few pay attention to other important aspects of performance, such as sound quality or timbre. This is particularly true in violin education, where the quality of timbre plays a significant role in the assessment of musical performances.

Fear-avoidance and Pelvic Floor Muscle Function are Associated With Pain Intensity in Women With Vulvodynia.

Objective: To investigate the association between fear-avoidance variables, pelvic floor muscle (PFM) function, pain intensity in women with provoked vestibulodynia (PVD), as well as the moderator effect of partner support.

Materials And Methods: A sample of 173 women diagnosed with PVD participated in the study. Fear-avoidance variables were assessed with validated self-administered questionnaires: pain catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale), pain-related fear (Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale), and partner support (Partner Support Questionnaire).

Legal access to alcohol and criminality.

Previous research has found strong evidence that legal access to alcohol is associated with sizable increases in criminality. We revisit this relationship using the census of judicial records on criminal charges filed in Oregon Courts, the ability to separately track crimes involving firearms, and to track individuals over time. We find that crime increases at age 21, with increases mostly due to assaults that lack premeditation, and alcohol-related nuisance crimes.

The eukaryotic enzyme Bds1 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a metallo-β-lactamase-related enzyme evolutionarily originating from bacterial horizontal gene transfer that serves an unknown biological role. Previously, Bds1 was reported to be an alkyl and aryl sulfatase. However, we demonstrate here that Bds1 acts on primary alkyl sulfates (of 6-12 carbon atoms) but not the aryl sulfates p-nitrophenyl sulfate and p-nitrocatechol sulfate.

Eye of the Beholder: Stage Entrance Behavior and Facial Expression Affect Continuous Quality Ratings in Music Performance.

Judgments of music performance quality are commonly employed in music practice, education, and research. However, previous studies have demonstrated the limited reliability of such judgments, and there is now evidence that extraneous visual, social, and other "non-musical" features can unduly influence them. The present study employed continuous measurement techniques to examine how the process of forming a music quality judgment is affected by the manipulation of temporally specific visual cues.

Background: Provoked vestibulodynia is a highly prevalent condition characterized by acute recurrent pain located at the vaginal entrance in response to pressure application or attempted vaginal penetration. Despite a wide variety of treatments offered to women with provoked vestibulodynia, a high proportion of women are refractory to conventional treatment. Transcranial direct-current stimulation is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that has been shown effective for improving various chronic pain conditions.
