In recent years, the application of gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) technology has made great progress. Due to the similar essence of a monoatomic ion beam, the GCIB also shows flashes of brilliance in material processing. It has been reported that smoothness can be greatly improved after the rough surface is bombarded by the GCIB.

Spherical mirrors with large R numbers have extreme advantages in optical systems with large apertures and long focus lengths for improving imaging resolution and field of view. Their manufacturing and testing accuracy directly affects the final wavefront aberration of the systems. However, due to the influence of airflow disturbance in the long optical path, testing large R number spherical mirrors with high precision is difficult for the direct testing method.

The diffraction efficiency, defined as the ratio of diffracted power to incident power, is one of the key working indicators for a computer-generated hologram (CGH). The CGH with high diffraction efficiency could suppress stray light and eliminate ghost images, thus improving interferometric performance in aspherical testing of low-reflectivity or large off-axis distance surfaces. However, the high-efficiency CGH is hard to precisely fabricate by traditional reactive ion etching and focusing ion beam, because it requires high etching depth with a high uniformity and sub-nanometric roughness in the glass, especially in the fabrication of a large CGH with an aperture of up to 300 mm.

In the process of manufacturing the world's largest silicon carbide (SiC) aspheric mirror, the primary difficulties are mirror blank preparation, asphere fabrication, and testing, as well as cladding and coating. Specifically, the challenges include the homogeneity of the complicated structure casting, accuracy and efficiency of the fabrication process, print-through effect, fidelity and precision of test procedure, stress and denseness of cladding process, the dynamic range of interferometric measurement, and air turbulence error due to the long optical path. To break through such a barrier of difficulties, we proposed the water-soluble room temperature vanishing mold and gel casting technology, homogeneous microstructure reaction-formed joint technology, nano-accuracy efficient compound fabrication, gravity unloading technology, high-denseness low-defect physical vapor deposition (PVD) Si-cladding technology, test data fusion method, and time-domain averaging method, etc.

During the ion beam figuring (IBF) of a space mirror, thermal radiation of the neutral filament and particle collisions will heat the mirror. The adhesive layer used to bond the metal parts and the mirror is very sensitive to temperature rise. When the temperature exceeds the designed value, the mirror surface shape will change markedly because of the thermal deformation and stress release of the adhesive layer, thereby reducing the IBF accuracy.

In the Macao Peninsula, the high population density (49,763 inhabitants/km2) and the lack of control over the number of vehicles (460 vehicles/km) have led to an increase in urban pollution. To provide useful information to local government and urban planners, this paper investigates the spatial distribution of traffic noise in the Macao Peninsula. The interactions among urban form, traffic flow and traffic noise are addressed.

In the Pearl River Delta of China, the rapidly developing industrial and agricultural activities, municipal development and use of chemicals caused serious environmental problems. This report summarizes the published scientific data on POPs in the environment of the Pearl River Delta, including the levels of POPs in the air, water, soil, river and estuarine sediments, the marine organisms like fish and shellfish in this region. The data preliminarily reveal the state of contamination in this region and give insight into the fate of POPs in this sub-tropical area.

The technology of artificial neural network was used for inversing water quality parameters from TM imagery data in the paper in order to study water quality and eutrophic status of lake. On the basis of satellite synchronous monitoring experiment, a BP neural network model was constructed, in which concentrations of SS, CODMn, DO, T-N, T-P and chlo-a were inversed from Landsat TM data and the accuracy of which was good, the relative error of which could be controlled below 25%. Moreover, the reasons of simulating error, ways of improving model and applications of the model were also analyzed in detail.
