We experimentally confirm that diamond surface cooling can significantly enhance the output performance of a sub-nanosecond diode-end-pumped passively Q-switched Yb:YAG laser. It is found that the pulse energy obtained with diamond cooling is approximately 1.5 times greater than that obtained without diamond cooling, where a Cr(4+):YAG absorber with the initial transmission of 84% is employed.

We investigate the performance of a hybrid Q-switched (HQS) fiber laser that is constructed with a low RF-power driven acousto-optic (AO) Q-switch and an AlGaInAs semiconductor saturable absorber. The mutations of the p53 gene previously represented one of several genetic changes involved in the development of bovine leukemia virus (BLV)-induced lymphosarcoma, while the effects of these mutations on the function of p53 are unknown. We identified four mutations of p53 gene in BLV-infected cattle with lymphosarcoma and demonstrated clearly the existence of two functionally distinct groups of mutants: (i) the mutant forms with substitutions at codons 241 and 242, which were mapped within an evolutionally conserved region and corresponded to the human "hot-spot" mutations, had completely lost the capacities for transactivation and growth suppression and gained transdominant repression activity in p53-null SAOS-2 cells; and (ii) the mutations at codons 206 and 207 were located outside the evolutionally conserved regions. These mutants partially retained the capacity for transactivation and growth suppression and failed to inhibit the transactivation activity of coexpressed wild-type p53, instead showing an enhancement of this activity.

Theileria sergenti piroplasms were purified from different parasitemia peaks of cattle infected with parasitized erythrocytes or sporozoites during persistent infection. Their reactivities with monoclonal antibodies 13F5 and C9, which recognize 23 kDa and 32 kDa piroplasm surface proteins, respectively, were analyzed. Antigenic differences were observed among parasites from different parasitemia peaks during persistent infection when cattle were infected with sporozoites.

Epitopes on a 32 kDa protein, which is an immunodominant major surface protein of Theileria sergenti, recognized by anti-merozoite monoclonal antibodies were characterized. The results of a competitive binding assay between monoclonal antibodies indicated that there were at least three epitopes in this protein. The lysate of Theileria sergenti piroplasms was tested for proteinases using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in which substrate was included in gel matrix. Six proteinases of molecular weight 330, 125, 98, 94, 67 and 58 kilodalton (kDa) were detected. From the results of the Triton X-114 phase partition, 330, 125 and 58 kDa proteinases were partitioned into aqueous phase, which indicated that they were not associated with parasite membranes.
