Bacterial contamination is an inevitable issue during the processing of semen preservation in pigs. As a prototypical endotoxin from Gram-negative bacteria in semen, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) undermines sperm function during liquid preservation. Spermine and spermidine could protect cells against LPS-induced injury, and the content of spermine and spermidine in seminal plasma is positively correlated with sperm quality.

A simple pyrazoline derivative BBD has been synthesized for detecting Cu in EtOH/HEPES (v/v = 1 : 1, pH = 7). The probe has high selectivity for Cu by quenching the fluorescence intensity and was sensitive to pH. When excited at 398 nm, fluorescence is emitted at 520 nm with a Stokes shift of 122 nm, which is larger than that of other reported pyrazoline skeleton probes.

Patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at higher risk for severe COVID-19 and long-term complications in bone health. Emerging clinical evidence demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 infection reduces bone turnover and promotes bone loss, but the mechanism underlying worsened bone health remains elusive. This study sought to identify specific immune mediators that exacerbated preexisting IMIDs after SARS-CoV-2 exposure.

Recent advances in medical plastics highlight the need for sustainable materials with desirable elastic properties. Traditional polyester elastomers have been used as alternatives to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) due to their biocompatibility and adjustable mechanical properties. However, these materials often lack the necessary stability and toughness for reliable medical applications.

Soil borne diseases are one of the most serious diseases which often results the decline of vegetables quality and loss of production. Moreover, it is difficult for plants to exhibit disease symptoms in the early stages attributing to strong concealment of soil borne pathogens. Therefore, early detection of pathogens and their physiological races plays an important role in reducing the harm of pathogens associated with diseases of vegetable crops.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate how thyroid hormone levels are related to controlled attenuation parameters (CAP), which may provide insights for understanding the role of these factors in hepatic steatosis.

Methods: A total of 3461 participants who underwent CAP diagnosis between 2018 and 2023 were included. The associations between thyroid hormone levels and CAP were evaluated through multiple linear regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS) and threshold effect analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • - Periodontitis is a chronic disease caused by dental plaque that can lead to tooth loss, and existing treatments often fail to effectively eliminate harmful biofilms and excessive inflammation.
  • - Researchers have developed an injectable nanoenzyme hydrogel called GDY-Fe@HA-DA, which has strong tissue adhesion and antibacterial properties, and works even better when exposed to near-infrared laser light.
  • - This new hydrogel has shown promising results in treating bacterial infections and promoting healing in both skin wounds and rat models of periodontitis, indicating its potential as a therapeutic option for oral health and tissue injuries.

Article Synopsis
  • Cisplatin (DDP) is an effective treatment for advanced ovarian cancer but faces issues like resistance and toxicity; traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), specifically the herb pair Scutellaria barbata D.Don and Hedyotis diffusa Willd (SB-HD), are being explored for their potential to enhance DDP's effectiveness.
  • In laboratory studies, a 2:1 ratio of SB-HD to DDP showed synergistic effects in reducing ovarian cancer cell viability, promoting apoptosis, and inhibiting cell migration; in animal models, this combination significantly suppressed tumor growth while minimizing DDP's toxic side effects.
  • The mechanism behind this synergistic effect involves promoting oxidative stress, altering energy production, and modulating specific

Background: The T790M mutation in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene is the primary cause of resistance to EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Previous research demonstrated that certain traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) monomers exhibit anti-tumor effects against various malignancies. This study aims to investigate the potentials of shikonin screened from a TCM monomer library containing 1060 monomers in killing EGFR-T790M drug-resistant NSCLC cells and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Background: The global prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in people living with HIV (PLWH) is on the rise in the post era of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Nevertheless, there are no validated predictive models available for assessing the risk of MetS in this specific population.

Methods: This study included PLWH who participated in annual follow-ups at Southern Medical University Nanfang Hospital from September 2022 to November 2023.

Exosomes extracted from synovial fluid (SF-exo) reflect the status of their originating cells. The proteomic profiles of SF-exo are important for the diagnosis of osteoarthritis (OA). To delineate the proteomic differences between SF-exo from OA patients and healthy individuals, a quantitative proteomic study based on iTRAQ technology was performed.

Bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance represent significant global public health challenges, necessitating the development of innovative antibacterial agents with targeted delivery capabilities. Our study utilized macrophages' natural ability to recognize bacteria and the increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) at infection sites to develop a novel nanoparticle for targeted delivery and controlled release. We prepared bacteria-activated macrophage membranes triggered by Staphylococcus aureus (Sa-MMs), which showed significantly higher expression of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), compared to normal macrophage membranes (MMs).

Background: Early weight bearing is crucial for fracture healing after osteosynthesis for intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs). The optimal period to start weight bearing after surgery is still under debate. The aim of this study was to compare immediate weight bearing (IWB) as tolerated with delayed weight bearing (DWB) following intramedullary fixationin elderly ITF patients.

This study aims to establish the implementation standard of health technology assessment(HTA) in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), so as to promote the scientific and standardized implementation and application of HTA in TCM for high-quality decision-making. Based on the published HTA method guidelines, the literature analysis and expert consensus method were used to establish the implementation standard of HTA in TCM with implementation steps, assessment domains, and reporting checklists as the main content. A total of 41 HTA guidelines were included.

Article Synopsis
  • Polymer-based thermally conductive composites are essential in microelectronics for effective heat dissipation, where the arrangement of fillers and their interaction with the polymer matrix significantly influence thermal conductivity.
  • This study focuses on boron nitride (BN) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), revealing that modifying BN improves its thermal conductivity and that careful alignment of BN can enhance conductivity in both directions.
  • Experiments show that BN/HEC composites achieve impressive thermal conductivities and significantly reduce thermal resistance, leading to better thermal management, which can lower the temperature of LED Al substrates by over 15 °C compared to standard composite films.
