Outcomes and Blood Product Use in 89 Surgically Managed and 79 Medically Managed Cases of Acute Spontaneous Hemoperitoneum in the Dog.

To describe a population of dogs with acute spontaneous hemoperitoneum (ASH) that were treated with either surgical or medical management in the first 12 h after presentation, and to perform a preliminary investigation into whether there were differences in achieving cardiovascular stabilization or patterns of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion between patients treated with early (<12 h) surgery vs.medical management. A retrospective multicenter preliminary study performed on 168 dogs presenting with ASH between January 2015 and May 2019.

Relationship of ventricular assist device support duration with pediatric heart transplant outcomes.

Background: There is wide variability in the timing of heart transplant (HTx) after pediatric VAD implant. While some centers wait months before listing for HTx, others accept donor heart offers within days of VAD surgery. We sought to determine if HTx within 30 days versus ≥ 30 after VAD impacts post-HTx outcomes.

The current study investigates the differential coping strategies and mental health consequences of food insecurity in relation to period of the lifespan (middle vs. late adulthood) and household composition (living with vs. without children).

Markers of chronic disease risk in a cohort of Aboriginal children: findings from the Study of Environment on Aboriginal Resilience and Child Health (SEARCH).

Objective: This study investigated chronic disease risk markers among a cohort of Aboriginal children in New South Wales.

Methods: Distributions of body mass index (BMI), blood lipids and haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) among Aboriginal children aged 5-<19 years were investigated. Prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated for borderline/high total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and HbA1c, and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, by age group, sex and BMI.

Teaching meiosis with the DNA triangle framework: A classroom activity that changes how students think about chromosomes.

Many biology students struggle to learn about the process of meiosis and have particular difficulty understanding the molecular basis of crossing over and the importance of homologous pairing for proper segregation. To help students overcome these challenges, we designed an activity that uses a newly developed Chromosome Connections Kit® from 3-D Molecular Designs to allow learners to explore meiosis at the molecular level. We took a backwards design approach in constructing an effective classroom activity.

Cognitive deficits commonly accompany psychiatric disorders but are often underrecognised, and difficult to treat. The 5-HT receptor is a promising potential treatment target for cognitive impairment because in animal studies 5-HT receptor agonists enhance hippocampal-dependent memory processes. To date, there has been little work translating these effects to humans.

Dyadic parent-adolescent relationship quality as pathways from maternal childhood abuse to adolescent psychopathology.

Children of maternal caregivers abused in childhood are at increased risk for mental health problems including anxiety and depression. To date, most studies exploring the intergenerational transmission of trauma have focused on younger children, with far fewer studies investigating adolescent mental health. Previous research suggests that maternal childhood abuse negatively impacts the parent-adolescent relationship, which may contribute to the development and maintenance of adolescent mental health problems.

Utility of fractional exhaled nitric oxide suppression as a prediction tool for progression to biologic therapy.

Rationale: The utility of fractional exhaled nitric oxide ( ) suppression (FeNOSuppT) to identify non-adherence to inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment has previously been reported, but whether it can predict clinical outcome remains unclear.

Objectives: We examined the utility of FeNOSuppT in prediction of progression to biologic agents or discharge from specialist care.

Methods: FeNOSuppT was measured at home using remote monitoring technology of inhaler use alongside daily measurement over 7 days.

Concepts of molecular biology and genetics are difficult for many biology undergraduate students to master yet are crucial for deep understanding of how life works. By asking students to draw their ideas, we attempted to uncover the mental models about genes and gene expression held by biology students ( = 23) and experts ( = 18) using semistructured interviews. A large divide was identified between novice and expert conceptions.

Incidence and Predictors of Gram-Negative Bacilli in Hospitalized People Who Inject Drugs with Injection Drug Use-Attributable Infections.

The objective of this study was to quantify incidence and determine predictors of Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) in people who inject drugs (PWID) with injection-drug use (IDU)-related infections. The investigation was a retrospective cohort of hospitalized PWID from January 2017 to December 2019. Inclusion criteria were age of ≥18 years, active IDU, treated IDU-attributable infection, and organism growth from microbiology cultures.

Patterns of compliance with COVID-19 preventive behaviours: a latent class analysis of 20 000 UK adults.

Background: Governments have implemented a range of measures to tackle COVID-19, primarily focusing on changing citizens' behaviours in order to lower the transmission of the virus. Few studies have looked at the patterns of compliance with different measures within individuals: whether people comply with all measures or selectively choose some but not others. Such research is important for designing interventions to increase compliance.

Potential microplastic release from the maritime industry: Abrasion of rope.

While land-based sources of plastic pollution have gained increasing attention in recent years, ocean-based sources have been less well studied. The aim of this study was to compare a variety of ropes (differing in age, wear surface and material) to quantify and characterise the production of microplastic during use. This was achieved by simulating, in laboratory and field experiments, rope hauling activity which is typically performed on board maritime vessels, such as fishing boats.

Pd(II) complexes with chelating N-(1-alkylpyridin-4(1H)-ylidene)amide (PYA) ligands: Synthesis, characterization and evaluation of anticancer activity.

The bidentate N-(1-Alkylpyridin-4(1H)-ylidene)amide (PYA) pro-ligands [HL][Cl] (2), and [HL][TfO] (3) were prepared by simple alkylation reactions of the known compound, N,N-di(pyridin-4-yl)oxalamide (HL, 1). The Pd(II) complexes, [Pd(L)][Cl] (4), [Pd(L)][Cl][TfO] (5), Pd(L)Cl (6) and Pd(L)Cl (7) were synthesized through reactions between these pro-ligands and suitable Pd(II) substrates in the presence of base. The molecular structures of 3 and 6 were obtained by single crystal X-ray structure determinations.

Gestational diabetes and risk of breast cancer before age 55 years.

Background: The history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been associated with breast cancer risk in some studies, particularly in young women, but results of cohort studies are conflicting.

Methods: We pooled data from 257 290 young (age <55 years) women from five cohorts. We used multivariable Cox proportional-hazards regression to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between GDM history and risk of breast cancer, overall and by oestrogen receptor (ER) status, before age 55 years, adjusted for established breast cancer risk factors.

Workforce safety in the remote health sector of Australia: a scoping review.

Objectives: To scope the evidence surrounding workplace health and safety risks for the remote health workforce in Australia and to collate the recommendations to address those risks.

Design: A five-stage scoping review framework refined by Cooper was used for this review. Informit Health Collection, Ovid Emcare, Medline, Web of Science Core Collection, ProQuest and the grey literature were searched in October 2020 using a combination of key words derived from the eligibility criteria.

Erectile Dysfunction and Treatment: An Analysis of Associated Chronic Health Conditions.

Objectives: To estimate the association between an erectile dysfunction (ED) diagnosis and other chronic health conditions, as well as, the association between receiving ED treatment and these conditions.

Methods: Data was reviewed from the IBM MarketScan Claims and Encounters database between 2008-2017 for men ≥18 years. Of this cohort, common chronic health conditions were identified and the associations of receiving ED treatment and having a chronic health condition was then analyzed.

Ionization and structural properties of mRNA lipid nanoparticles influence expression in intramuscular and intravascular administration.

Lipid Nanoparticles (LNPs) are used to deliver siRNA and COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. The main factor known to determine their delivery efficiency is the pKa of the LNP containing an ionizable lipid. Herein, we report a method that can predict the LNP pKa from the structure of the ionizable lipid.

Cerebrospinal fluid cytokine, chemokine, and SARS-CoV-2 antibody profiles in children with neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with COVID-19.

Background: Neuropsychiatric symptoms and CSF cytokine, chemokine, and SARS-COV-2 antibody profiles are unknown in pediatric patients with COVID-19 or multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), (NP-COVID-19).

Methods: Children at a single pediatric institution quaternary referral center with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or MIS-C and neuropsychiatric symptoms were included in this retrospective case series. Clinical symptoms, ancillary testing data, treatments and outcomes are described.

This project illuminates the unique struggles and barriers lesbians face. A community advisory board (CAB) was developed and 31 in-depth interviews were conducted with lesbians aged 56-84 in the Rocky Mountain region. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and coded using critical discourse analysis.

A Graph Theory Approach to Clarifying Aging and Disease Related Changes in Cognitive Networks.

In accordance with the physiological networks that underlie it, human cognition is characterized by both the segregation and interdependence of a number of cognitive domains. Cognition itself, therefore, can be conceptualized as a network of functions. A network approach to cognition has previously revealed topological differences in cognitive profiles between healthy and disease populations.
