In February, 1976, a Peace Corps worker returned to the United States from Sierra Leone with an undiagnosed illness later recognized as Lassa fever. To assess the risk of transmission and to contain a potential outbreak, we identified 552 contacts as having had exposure to the patient before the start of strict isolation procedures, and maintained intensive surveillance on these contacts for 21 days. At the end of the surveillance period, no illness had developed in contacts.

Judging by 203 cases the pelvic displacement osteotomie by Chiari has proven to be a very effective method to correct the deficient femoral head cover of the dysplastic acetabulum, in many cases however it is difficult to normalize the roof angle. We examined 51-joints in which the pelvic osteotomie by Chiari had been performed just before and particularily after growth had come to an end, in view of the prophylaxis of arthrosis of this operation. Hereby we observed that development or increase of anthrotic signs on an average of 10 1/2 years was less frequent than could be expected without the osteotomy, the clinical condition remaining approximately the same as before the operation, but nevertheless did not deteriorate.

A hamster-associated epizootic of lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus infection in medical center personnel at the University of Rochester in 1973 necessitated prompt termination of the Syrain hamster colony. Necropsies were performed on 130 hamsters, blood speciments were obtained from 60 for serotest, and viral isolation procedures were done on 47. Active virus infection, as shown by virus isolation, was associated with the presence of lymphoreticular infiltrate in liver and kidney.

The safety of oral rabies vaccine was evaluated in 3 species of rodents, animals which might inadvertently consume field-distributed vaccine baits intended for foxes. The potentials for infection from bait ingestion and transmission through cannibalism were evaluated. Results indicate that ingestion of the vaccine baits used in these experiments will result in infection and disease of some rodents.

Foxes were orally vaccinated against rabies with two modified live vaccine viruses, ERA/BHK-21 and PRI strain, in sausage baits. The baits proved acceptable to caged foxes and effectively delivered immunizing doses of vaccine. Antibody profiles on the vaccinated foxes and intramuscular challenge with "street" rabies virus showed the ERA/BHK-21 vaccine to be more effective than the PRI vaccine.

The definition of capacity and strain of the hip joint has since Pauwels (1965 and 1973) been examined and quantitative and qualitative described by various authors. In the following it is attempted to state the relations between intertrochanter correction and the position of the hip joint, which enable a declaration on the dislocation of the main carrying zone of the head of femur. Factors and methods being complementary and such having an effect of contrary sence are thereat especially described.

The heme related circular dichroic bands of solubilized cytochrome P-450 from rabbit liver and some of its complexes with type I- and type II-substrayes and heme iron ligands were measured in the Soret region. All P-450 dersorption. The positions of the dichroic bands together with their ellipticities vary with ligand substitution and the oxidative state of the iron.

Investigation of an outbreak of prolonged febrile illness in medical center personnel at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry revealed lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus to be the causative agent. Syrian or golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were found to be the only animals involved in maintaining the virus and were the source of human infections. Isolations of LCM virus were made from autopsy specimens of 13 of 46 (28%) golden hamsters.

Levels of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus antibody were assayed in 62 infected persons. The three tests used were indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA), complement fixation, and neutralization in mice. The sera first became positive by the IFA test, and IFA titers rapidly rose to a relatively high level, with the sera remaining positive long after the antibody detectable by complement fixation had disappeared.

A method for immunizing foxes against rabies was evaluated. Fifteen of 36 red foxes (Vulpes fulva) fed baits impregnated with modified live virus rabies vaccine developed serum rabies neutralizing antibody. The vaccine-bait proved unstable when held at 4 C or 25 C for 96 hours prior to feeding.
