The 2016 Alberta wildfires resulted in widespread destruction of property and displacement of residents. Research aimed to identify the roles and responsibilities of social work practitioners and human service professionals in long-term disaster recovery. This article presents the findings from interviews, focus groups, and a survey with a total of 140 participants in Alberta, Canada.

The transport and chemical identification of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are critical to the concerns over plastic accumulation in the environment. Chemically and physically transient MNP species present unique challenges for isolation and analysis due to many factors such as their size, color, surface properties, morphology, and potential for chemical change. These factors contribute to the eventual environmental and toxicological impact of MNPs.

Spinopelvic Hypermobility Corrects After Staged Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty.

Spinopelvic hypermobility may be secondary to a stiff osteoarthritic hip with a compliant spine. We sought to determine if spinopelvic hypermobility resolves after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and when it resolves in patients with bilateral hip osteoarthritis (OA) undergoing staged bilateral THA. We also sought to analyze the change in spinopelvic parameters before and after the second THA.

Parricide is underresearched in the UK, and the contexts of this gendered form of violence are poorly understood. Heide's typology provides an advanced understanding of parricide in the United States, where the majority of parent-killings involve firearms. This article develops a UK-based analysis of the contexts of parricide, combining national statistics with police case study data ( = 57) and case review data ( = 21).

Improving exchange rate forecasting via a new deep multimodal fusion model.

Exchange rates are affected by the impact of disparate types of new information as well as the couplings between these modalities. Previous work mainly predicted exchange rates solely based on market indicators and therefore achieved unsatisfactory results. In response to such an issue, this study develops an inventive multimodal fusion-based long short-term memory (MF-LSTM) model to forecast the USD/CNY exchange rate.

Background: The purpose of our study was to assess the accuracy of a commercially available wearable sensor in replicating pelvic tilt movement in both the sitting and standing position in patients before total hip arthroplasty.

Methods: This prospective study evaluated patients undergoing a primary unilateral total hip arthroplasty by a single surgeon. Patients were excluded if they had a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 kg/m.

Outcomes and Patient Safety in Overlapping vs. Nonoverlapping Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: Overlapping surgery is defined as two cases occurring in separate operating rooms (ORs), where the same attending surgeon conducts the critical surgical portions of each case at different times. Although it has been suggested that this established practice may improve the utilization of resources, allow for more opportunities to teach surgical trainees, and facilitate timely access to care, there is still no consensus on its use in elective orthopaedic surgery, such as total joint arthroplasty (TJA).

Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature was done according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to identify articles investigating the use of overlapping and single operating room TJA.

Aims: Spinopelvic mobility plays an important role in functional acetabular component position following total hip arthroplasty (THA). The primary aim of this study was to determine if spinopelvic hypermobility persists or resolves following THA. Our second aim was to identify patient demographic or radiological factors associated with hypermobility and resolution of hypermobility after THA.

An Overview of Telehealth in Total Joint Arthroplasty.

With the increase in technological advances over the years, telehealth services in orthopedic surgery have gained in popularity, yet adoption among surgeons has been slow. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, orthopedic surgery practices nationwide have accelerated adaptation to telemedicine. Telehealth can be effectively applied to total joint arthroplasty, with the ability to perform preoperative consultations, postoperative follow-up, and telerehabilitation in a virtual, remote manner with similar outcomes to in-person visits.

The biomechanics of subscapularis repair in reverse shoulder arthroplasty: The effect of lateralization and insertion site.

Functional outcomes of subscapularis (SSc) repair following reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) remains controversial. SSc repair in combination with glenosphere lateralization was reported to yield worse clinical outcomes compared with the non-lateralized glenosphere. The aim of this biomechanical study was to investigate how glenosphere lateralization and different re-insertion sites can affect the biomechanics of the SSc after RSA.

Functional characterization of alternatively spliced GSN in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

We have recently performed the characterization of alternative splicing events (ASEs) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, which allows dysregulation of protein expression common for cancer cells. Such analysis demonstrated a high ASE prevalence among tumor samples, including tumor-specific alternative splicing in the GSN gene.In vitro studies confirmed that overall expression of either ASE-GSN or wild-type GSN (WT-GSN) isoform inversely correlated with cell proliferation, whereas the high ratio of ASE-GSN to WT-GSN correlated with increased cellular invasion.

Particle Fabrication Using Inkjet Printing onto Hydrophobic Surfaces for Optimization and Calibration of Trace Contraband Detection Sensors.

A method has been developed to fabricate patterned arrays of micrometer-sized monodisperse solid particles of ammonium nitrate on hydrophobic silicon surfaces using inkjet printing. The method relies on dispensing one or more microdrops of a concentrated aqueous ammonium nitrate solution from a drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet printer at specific locations on a silicon substrate rendered hydrophobic by a perfluorodecytrichlorosilane monolayer coating. The deposited liquid droplets form into the shape of a spherical shaped cap; during the evaporation process, a deposited liquid droplet maintains this geometry until it forms a solid micrometer sized particle.

The sexual habitus of transgender men: negotiating sexuality through gender.

In this article, the authors consider how trans men's decisions about physical body modifications impact their sense of themselves as gendered and sexual actors. Based on interviews with 74 trans men, the authors explore how their embodiment, gender identity, erotic ideation, lifetime of sexual practices, and domain of potential partners-what the authors term "sexual habitus"-can be affirmed, transformed, or challenged as their embodiment changes. These changes underscore the dynamic relationship between gender and sexuality and illustrate how bodies matter in sexual trajectories across the life course.

Assessment of signs of anterior blepharitis using standardized color photographs.

Purpose: To describe a standardized technique for acquiring and viewing photographic images of eyelids, assess the reproducibility and validity of a grading protocol for signs of anterior blepharitis, and to explore whether the signs depend on the eyelid or the area of the eyelid assessed.

Methods: Subjects with anterior blepharitis ranging from none to severe were examined by ophthalmologists at clinical sites. Digital images of the eyelids of subjects were acquired using a protocol that allowed for the calibration of color and luminance.

There has been a recent increase in interest for non-cemented fixation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), however the superiority of cement fixation is an ongoing debate. Whereas the results based on Level III and IV evidence show similar survivorship rates between the two types of fixation, Level I and II evidence strongly support cemented fixation. United Kingdom, Australia, Sweden, and New Zealand registry data show lower failure rates and greater usage of cemented than non-cemented fixation.

Thermal desorption and vapor transport characteristics in an explosive trace detector.

Swipe-based explosive trace detectors rely on thermal desorption to vaporize explosive particles collected on a swipe. The vaporized material is carried by air flows from the desorption unit to the inlet of the chemical analyzer, typically an ion mobility spectrometer. We have observed that the amount of explosives detected from a swipe varies with the physical location of explosives collected on the swipe.

Application of inkjet printing technology to produce test materials of 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5 triazcyclohexane for trace explosive analysis.

The feasibility of the use of piezoelectric drop-on-demand inkjet printing to prepare test materials for trace explosive analysis is demonstrated. RDX (1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5 triazcyclohexane) was formulated into inkjet printable solutions and jetted onto substrates suitable for calibration of the ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) instruments currently deployed worldwide for contraband screening. Gravimetric analysis, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy were used to verify inkjet printer solution concentrations and the quantity of explosive dispensed onto test materials.
