Changing culture: An intervention to improve blood culture quality in the emergency department.

Objective: Blood cultures (BCs) remain a key investigation in ED patients at risk of bacteraemia. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a multi-modal, nursing-led intervention to improve the quality of BCs in the ED, in terms of single culture, underfilling and contamination rates.

Method: The present study was conducted in the ED of a large urban tertiary referral hospital.

Cognitive deficits are a common comorbidity with neurological disorders and normal aging. Inflammation is associated with multiple diseases including classical neurodegenerative dementias such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS), in which over half of all patients experience some form of cognitive deficits. Other degenerative diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) including frontotemporal lobe dementia (FTLD), and Parkinson's disease (PD) as well as traumatic brain injury (TBI) and psychological disorders like major depressive disorder (MDD), and even normal aging all have cytokine-associated reductions in cognitive function.

Observation of τ Lepton Pair Production in Ultraperipheral Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV.

We present an observation of photon-photon production of τ lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404  μb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV.

Childhood poverty is the most widespread and important modifiable risk factor for the development of a range of health outcomes, including childhood-onset mental health problems. In the United States, 30 million children are growing up impoverished, which ranks among the highest per capita rates of child poverty among high-income countries. As a nation, the United States does less to support its poor children and their families than any other wealthy country, despite scientific evidence that growing up in poverty significantly increases lifetime risk of physical and mental health problems, reduces likelihood of academic and vocational success, and leads to poorer social outcomes for children.

Are return-to-play times longer in lower-limb muscle injuries involving the intramuscular tendon? A systematic review.

Objectives: To determine the influence of severity and direction (craniocaudal length vs cross-sectional area) of intramuscular tendon tears in the lower limb on return-to-play times, compared to muscle injuries without intramuscular tendon involvement.

Design: Systematic review with meta-analysis.

Methods: AMED, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, ScienceDirect, PubMed (MEDLINE) and Web-of-Science were searched from inception to 31st July 2023, retrieving 666 records, of which nine were deemed eligible.

Pain assessment & management decision-making in pediatric critical care.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore how nurses in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) reach their pain management decisions in children who are mechanically ventilated and chemically paralyzed.

Design And Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used following a quantitative phase of a multi-method study. Eighteen PICU nurses participated in semi-structured interviews aiming at understanding how they assess pain and make management decisions.

Medial Prefrontal Cortex Dysfunction Mediates Working Memory Deficits in Patients With Schizophrenia.

Background: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is marked by working memory (WM) deficits, which predict poor functional outcome. While most functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of WM in SCZ have focused on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC), some recent work suggests that the medial PFC (mPFC) may play a role. We investigated whether task-evoked mPFC deactivation is associated with WM performance and whether it mediates deficits in SCZ.

Background: The effect of dehydration of cartilage samples and rehydration with native synovial fluid or normal saline on quantitative ultrashort echo time (UTE) biomarkers are unknown. We aimed to investigate the effect of cartilage dehydration-rehydration on UTE biomarkers and to compare the rehydration capabilities of native synovial fluid and normal saline.

Methods: A total of 37 cartilage samples were harvested from patients (n=5) who underwent total knee replacement.

Physiological Replication of the Human Glomerulus Using a Triple Culture Microphysiological System.

The function of the glomerulus depends on the complex cell-cell/matrix interactions and replication of this in vitro would aid biological understanding in both health and disease. Previous models do not fully reflect all cell types and interactions present as they overlook mesangial cells within their 3D matrix. Herein, the development of a microphysiological system that contains all resident renal cell types in an anatomically relevant manner is presented.

Background: Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) offer potential solutions for addressing mental health care gaps, but often suffer from low engagement. Text messaging is one promising medium for increasing access and sustaining user engagement with DMHIs. This paper examines the Small Steps SMS program, an 8-week, automated, adaptive text message-based intervention for depression and anxiety.

Student- and School-Level Factors Associated With Mental Health and Well-Being in Early Adolescence.

Objective: Adolescence is a key developmental window that may determine long-term mental health. As schools may influence mental health of students, this study aimed to examine the association of school-level characteristics with students' mental health over time.

Method: Longitudinal data from a cluster randomized controlled trial comprising 8,376 students (55% female; aged 11-14 years at baseline) across 84 schools in the United Kingdom were analyzed.

Examining intact kidney stones both qualitatively and quantitatively can be difficult due to their size and fragility. Many modern analysis methods often lead to the destruction of the stone's structure during sample preparation. Preserving the structural integrity is crucial for accurately determining the chemical distribution of the components of kidney stones, which, in turn, improves our understanding of the disease's etiology.

Background: Mitigating rating inconsistency can improve measurement fidelity and detection of treatment response.

Methods: The International Society for CNS Clinical Trials and Methodology convened an expert Working Group that developed logical consistency (LC) checks for ratings of the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), which is widely used in studies of mood and bipolar disorders. LC and statistical outlier-response pattern checks (SC) were applied to 63,228 YMRS administrations from 14 clinical trials evaluating treatments for bipolar disorder.

Modelling clinical narrative as computable knowledge: The NICE computable implementation guidance project.

Introduction: Translating narrative clinical guidelines to computable knowledge is a long-standing challenge that has seen a diverse range of approaches. The UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Content Advisory Board (CAB) aims ultimately to (1) guide clinical decision support and other software developers to increase traceability, fidelity and consistency in supporting clinical use of NICE recommendations, (2) guide local practice audit and intervention to reduce unwarranted variation, (3) provide feedback to NICE on how future recommendations should be developed.

Objectives: The first phase of work was to explore a range of technical approaches to transition NICE toward the production of natively digital content.

Unlabelled: The threat of invasive species to biodiversity and ecosystem structure is exacerbated by the increasingly concerning outlook of predicted climate change and other human influences. Developing preventative management strategies for invasive plant species before they establish is crucial for effective management. To examine how climate change may impact habitat suitability, we modeled the current and future habitat suitability of two terrestrial species, and , and two aquatic species, and , that are relatively new invasive plant species regionally, and are currently spreading in the Pacific Northwest (PNW, North America), an area of unique natural areas, vibrant economic activity, and increasing human population.
