Induction of interferon beta (IFN-β), IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs), and inflammatory responses is critical for control of viral infection. We recently identified an essential linkage of stimulation of the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and induction of ISGs that function as host restriction pathways against the emerging flavivirus West Nile virus (WNV) Here we utilized global transcriptome analysis of primary dendritic cells, known targets of WNV replication, to define gene signatures required for this IL-1β-driven antiviral response. Dendritic cells that were deficient in IL-1 receptor signaling showed dysregulation of cell-intrinsic defense genes and loss of viral control during WNV infection.

A Community-Based Collaborative Care Model to Improve Functional Health in Underserved Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Objective: Examine the effects of a 6-month health multidimensional intervention on physical function, bone density, and mood in a diverse sample of community-dwelling older adults at risk for frailty and excess disability.

Method: A quasi-experimental, pre- post-program design was implemented. Adults aged 55 years and older ( n = 337, 60% African American) participated in the intervention and received assessments at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months.

Ancient Regulatory Role of Lysine Acetylation in Central Metabolism.

Lysine acetylation is a common protein post-translational modification in bacteria and eukaryotes. Unlike phosphorylation, whose functional role in signaling has been established, it is unclear what regulatory mechanism acetylation plays and whether it is conserved across evolution. By performing a proteomic analysis of 48 phylogenetically distant bacteria, we discovered conserved acetylation sites on catalytically essential lysine residues that are invariant throughout evolution.

Psychosis as a sequelae of paraneoplastic syndrome in Small- Cell Lung Carcinoma: A psycho-neuroendocrine interface.

In 2013 more than 150,000 Americans died from all types of lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) represents about 13% of all lung cancers and is notoriously associated with paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS). Here we present an interesting case of psychosis associated with one such PNS-- ectopic Cushing syndrome of SCLC.

Time-Delay Integration Imaging with ICON's Far-Ultraviolet Imager.

A Time-Delay Integration (TDI) image processing system has been developed to capture ICON's Far Ultraviolet (FUV) Spectrographic Imager data. The TDI system is designed to provide variable-range motion-compensated imaging of Earth's nightside ionospheric limb and sub-limb scenes viewed from Low Earth Orbit in the 135.6 nm emission of oxygen with an integration time of 12 seconds.

Background: Early detection and interventions have enabled patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) to live well into adulthood. Consequently, the chronicity of SCD allows for the insidious manifestation of multisystem complications, including renal damage. Cystic renal lesions are commonly incidentally discovered on ultrasound and computerised tomography (CT) imaging of the abdomen.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to report survey response rates and demographic characteristics of eight recruitment approaches to determine acceptability and effectiveness of large-scale patient recruitment among various populations.

Pathogen recognition receptors (PRR)s and their cognate pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) represent the basis of innate immune activation and immune response induction driven by the host-pathogen interaction that occurs during microbial infection in humans and other animals. For RNA virus infection such as hepatitis C virus (HCV) and others, specific motifs within viral RNA mark it as nonself and visible to the host as a PAMP through interaction with RIG-I-like receptors including retinoic inducible gene-I (RIG-I). Here, we present methods for producing and using HCV PAMP RNA as a molecular tool to study RIG-I and its signaling pathway, both in vitro and in vivo, in innate immune regulation.

Implementing and evaluating a community-based, inter-institutional, interprofessional education pilot programme.

Many health professions programmes have begun integrating interprofessional learning into their curricula; however, community-based interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives are relatively scarce. The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance IPE Faculty Collaborative, comprised of faculty from five institutions, developed a community-based IPE programme that allowed students to engage in meaningful interprofessional activities while exposing them to social determinants of health. Thirty students from ten professions were divided into six teams and paired with three community organisations.
