The impact of chlorination on quorum sensing molecules (QSMs) is not often addressed in disinfection research. Yet pathogenicity and biofilm formation are controlled by quorum sensing (QS) in many bacteria. Chemical transformation of the compounds could have an impact on all of these processes.

Release and quantification of organic and inorganic contaminants from geotextile materials in dynamic surface leaching test.

Geotextiles are frequently used in waterway construction, for instance as filtration or separation layers of river banks and canals. A variety of additives are added to improve their lifespan during application and avivage agents are applied to optimize the manufacturing process. Two nonwoven needle-punched geotextiles were leached with deionized water, groundwater and river water via the dynamic surface leaching test.

Clinical Decision Support to Increase Emergency Department Naloxone Coprescribing: Implementation Report.

Background: Coprescribing naloxone with opioid analgesics is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) best practice to mitigate the risk of fatal opioid overdose, yet coprescription by emergency medicine clinicians is rare, occurring less than 5% of the time it is indicated. Clinical decision support (CDS) has been associated with increased naloxone prescribing; however, key CDS design characteristics and pragmatic outcome measures necessary to understand replicability and effectiveness have not been reported.

Objective: This study aimed to rigorously evaluate and quantify the impact of CDS designed to improve emergency department (ED) naloxone coprescribing.

The first night in an unfamiliar environment is marked by reduced sleep quality and changes in sleep architecture. This so-called first-night effect (FNE) is well established for two consecutive nights and lays the foundation for including an adaptation night in sleep research to counteract FNEs. However, adaptation nights rarely happen immediately before experimental nights, which raises the question of how sleep adapts over nonconsecutive nights.

Cement pastes containing air entraining agent release the biocide octylisothiazolinone posing ecotoxicological effects.

We investigated whether cement pastes are a possible source of ecotoxicologically potent substances. For this purpose, leaching according to DIN EN 16637-2 was performed on portland cement pastes as well as blast furnace slag cement with and without an air entraining agent (AEA). The AEA, consisting of wood rosin and resin, contained the stabiliser drometrizole and the biocide octylisothiazolinone (OIT), which was confirmed by our non-target screening (NTS).

Purpose: There is a lack of evidence regarding how patients with malignant brain tumor and their relatives experience participation in neurooncological clinical trials. Similarly, insights from the perspective of trial staff caring for this group of patients are missing. This study aims to investigate patient, relative and trial staff experiences regarding participation in clinical neurooncological trials.

From genes to toxins: Profiling Prymnesium parvum during a riverine harmful algal bloom.

Blooms of Prymnesium parvum, a unicellular alga globally distributed in marine and brackish environments, frequently result in massive fish kills due to the production of toxins called prymnesins by this haptophyte. In August 2022, a harmful algal bloom (HAB) of this species occurred in the lower Oder River (Poland and Germany), which caused mass mortalities of fish and other organisms. This HAB was linked to low discharge of the Oder and mining activities that caused a significant increase in salinity.

A comprehensive analytical method was developed to elucidate the "chemical communication" in pure bacterial cultures as well as in the aquatic environment and engineered environments with biofilms.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) offer an efficient alternative technology for removing emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) from wastewater. Optimizing CW performance requires understanding the impact of CW configuration on EOC removal and microbial community dynamics. This study investigated EOC removal and microbial communities in horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) CWs over a 26-month operational period.

Plasma extracellular vesicles in meningioma patients following radiotherapy as liquid biopsy- a prospective explorative biomarker study (ARO 2023-05/AG-NRO-07).

Background: While surgical resection remains the primary treatment approach for symptomatic or growing meningiomas, radiotherapy represents an auspicious alternative in patients with meningiomas not safely amenable to surgery. Biopsies are often omitted in light of potential postoperative neurological deficits, resulting in a lack of histological grading and (molecular) risk stratification. Purpose: The EORTC-26101 study was a randomized phase II and III clinical trial of bevacizumab in combination with lomustine versus lomustine alone in progressive glioblastoma. Other than for progression-free survival (PFS), there was no benefit from addition of bevacizumab for overall survival (OS). However, molecular data allow for the rare opportunity to assess prognostic biomarkers from primary surgery for their impact in progressive glioblastoma.

Pesticide dynamics in three small agricultural creeks in Hesse, Germany.

Background: Due to their high biodiversity, small water bodies play an important role for freshwater ecosystems. Nonetheless, systematic pesticide monitoring in small creeks with a catchment <30 km is rarely conducted.

Methods: In this study, event-driven water samples were taken from May until November 2017 and March until July 2018 after 20 rain events at three sampling sites with catchment areas of <27 km in the Wetterau, a region with intensive agriculture in Southern Hesse, Germany.

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of 2 clinical decision support (CDS) tools to avoid prescription of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in patients with heart failure (HF): a "commercial" and a locally "customized" alert.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 2 CDS tools implemented within a large integrated health system. The commercial CDS tool was designed according to third-party drug content and EHR vendor specifications.

The halogenation of quorum sensing molecules (QSMs) is known to be catalyzed by enzymes such as haloperoxidase (HPO) as well as cerium dioxide nanocrystals (NC), which mimic enzymes. Those enzymes and mimics can influence biological processes such as biofilm formation, where bacteria use QSMs for the "chemical" communication between each other and the coordination of surface colonization. However, not much is known about the degradation behavior of a broad spectrum of QSMs, especially for HPO and its mimics.
