In this work, the influence of the sample gas flow rate and the ionization region volume of an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) used as a detector in gas chromatography (GC) on GC-IMS peak shape has been investigated. Therefore, a drift tube IMS with a field-switching ion shutter, a defined ionization region volume and an ultra-violet radiation source was used. To identify the influence of the sample gas flow rate entering the ionization region (equals the GC carrier gas flow rate if no further make-up gas is used) and the ionization region volume on peak broadening and signal intensity, different sample volumes as they would elute from a GC were tested at a variety of sample gas flow rates at a given ionization region volume.

Decreased circulating branched chain amino acids (BCAA) represent a prominent change in amino acid profiles in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD). Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the leading cause of death from gastrointestinal disease in premature infants and is steadily rising in frequency. Patients who develop NEC have a very high mortality, illustrating the importance of developing novel prevention or treatment approaches. We and others have shown that NEC arises in part from exaggerated signaling via the bacterial receptor, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on the intestinal epithelium, leading to widespread intestinal inflammation and intestinal ischemia.

The use of bacteria as an alternative cancer therapy has been reinvestigated in recent years. SL7207: an auxotrophic Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium aroA mutant with immune-stimulatory potential has proven a promising strain for this purpose. Propionic acid (PA) is a bacterium-derived intestinal antimicrobial and immune modulator used widely in food production and agriculture. Passage of Crohn's disease-associated adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) through a murine model, in which intestinal PA levels are increased to mimic the human intestine, leads to the recovery of AIEC with significantly increased virulence. Similar phenotypic changes are observed outside the murine model when AIEC is grown in culture with PA as the sole carbon source; such PA exposure also results in AIEC that persists at 20-fold higher levels in vivo.

Glycogen storage disease type 1a (GSD Ia) is an inborn error of metabolism caused by mutations in the G6PC gene, encoding the catalytic subunit of glucose-6-phosphatase. Early symptoms include severe fasting intolerance, failure to thrive and hepatomegaly, biochemically associated with nonketotic hypoglycemia, fasting hyperlactidemia, hyperuricemia and hyperlipidemia. Background: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) using direct current (DC) is an effective method for the ablation of cardiac tissue. A major drawback of the use of DC-IRE, however, are two problems: requirement of general anesthesia due to severe muscle contractions and the formation of bubbles containing gaseous products from electrolysis. The use of high-frequency alternating current (HF-IRE) is expected to solve both problems, because HF-IRE produces little to no muscle spasms and does not cause electrolysis.

Macrophages in the healthy intestine are highly specialized and usually respond to the gut microbiota without provoking an inflammatory response. A breakdown in this tolerance leads to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but the mechanisms by which intestinal macrophages normally become conditioned to promote microbial tolerance are unclear. Strong epidemiological evidence linking disruption of the gut microbiota by antibiotic use early in life to IBD indicates an important role for the gut microbiota in modulating intestinal immunity.

Purpose: Intranasally delivered ST266, the biological, proteinaceous secretome of amnion-derived multipotent progenitor cells, reduces retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss, optic nerve inflammation, and demyelination in experimental optic neuritis.
