Systematic review of reviews on interventions to engage men and boys as clients, partners and agents of change for improved sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Objectives: Evidence regarding interventions to engage men and boys to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) has grown rapidly across subtopics such as HIV, family planning and gender-based violence (GBV). We conducted a review of the effectiveness of interventions to engage men and boys across SRHR domains, lessons learnt about successful programming, and about harms/unintended consequences, in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).

Design: Systematic review of reviews following Cochrane guidelines.

Bundling of unhealthy food products in Johannesburg, South Africa: an exploratory study.

South Africa has high levels of obesity and overweight, which contribute to non-communicable diseases and are associated with poor diets high in ultra-processed foods. Bundling occurs when two or more products are packaged and sold together, often at a discount and is a marketing strategy for unhealthy foods. Given the paucity of data on bundling of unhealthy foods, this exploratory study sought to document how unhealthy foods are bundled together to be more attractive to consumers in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Comparing the Neurocognitive Effects of Right Unilateral Ultra-Brief Pulse Electroconvulsive Therapy and Magnetic Seizure Therapy for the Treatment of Major Depressive Episode.

Background: Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is under investigation as a treatment for adults with major depression. Previous research has suggested that MST has antidepressant efficacy comparable to that of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), but with greater cognitive safety. The objective of the study was to compare the neurocognitive outcomes of patients receiving an acute course of MST with the outcomes of those receiving ECT for the treatment of major depressive episode.

Electroconvulsive Therapy Changes Immunological Markers in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent and disabling condition. As such, understanding the causes of and treatment options for MDD is critical. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains the gold standard depression treatment, but the molecular mechanisms that underlie its effects are still largely unknown.

The 17 Workshop on Recent Issues in Bioanalysis (17 WRIB) took place in Orlando, FL, USA on 19-23 June 2023. Over 1000 professionals representing pharma/biotech companies, CROs, and multiple regulatory agencies convened to actively discuss the most current topics of interest in bioanalysis. The 17 WRIB included 3 Main Workshops and 7 Specialized Workshops that together spanned 1 week to allow an exhaustive and thorough coverage of all major issues in bioanalysis of biomarkers, immunogenicity, gene therapy, cell therapy and vaccines.

Revision/Conversion Surgeries After One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass-An Experts' Modified Delphi Consensus.

Purpose: There is a lack of evidence for treatment of some conditions including complication management, suboptimal initial weight loss, recurrent weight gain, or worsening of a significant obesity complication after one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB). This study was designed to respond to the existing lack of agreement and to provide a valuable resource for clinicians by employing an expert-modified Delphi consensus method.

Methods: Forty-eight recognized bariatric surgeons from 28 countries participated in the modified Delphi consensus to vote on 64 statements in two rounds.

Postoperative Maintenance of Sagittal Plane Positioning of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint After Arthrodesis with an Isolated Dorsal Plate Construct: A Retrospective Review of 43 Feet.

Background: First metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis with isolated dorsal plating without a lag screw and without a compressive mechanism incorporated into the plate is not well studied. Although surface area for bony fusion is increased, there is concern for lower fusion rates and progressive loss of sagittal plane positioning. We present fusion rates and progressive sagittal plane deviation with isolated dorsal plate fixation.

Diffusion Tensor Phenomapping of the Healthy and Pressure-Overloaded Human Heart.

Current techniques to image the microstructure of the heart with diffusion tensor MRI (DTI) are highly under-resolved. We present a technique to improve the spatial resolution of cardiac DTI by almost 10-fold and leverage this to measure local gradients in cardiomyocyte alignment or helix angle (HA). We further introduce a phenomapping approach based on voxel-wise hierarchical clustering of these gradients to identify distinct microstructural microenvironments in the heart.

Clinical Outcomes of Magnetic Seizure Therapy vs Electroconvulsive Therapy for Major Depressive Episode: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is highly effective and rapid in treating depression, but it carries a risk of significant cognitive adverse effects. Magnetic seizure therapy (MST), an investigational antidepressant treatment, may maintain the robust antidepressant efficacy of ECT while substantially reducing adverse effects due to its enhanced focality and weaker stimulation strength; however, previous clinical trials of MST were limited by small sample sizes.

Objective: To compare the antidepressant efficacy of MST vs ultrabrief pulse right unilateral (RUL) ECT.

Home Hospital Outcomes for Acute Decompensated Heart Failure and Factors Associated With Escalation of Care.

Background: Overall outcomes and the escalation rate for home hospital admissions for heart failure (HF) are not known. We report overall outcomes, predict escalation, and describe care provided after escalation among patients admitted to home hospital for HF.

Methods: Our retrospective analysis included all patients admitted for HF to 2 home hospital programs in Massachusetts between February 2020 and October 2022.

Healthcare utilization during the first two waves of the COVID-19 epidemic in South Africa: A cross-sectional household survey.

Healthcare utilization surveys contextualize facility-based surveillance data for burden estimates. We describe healthcare utilization in the catchment areas for sentinel site healthcare facilities during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a cross-sectional healthcare utilization survey in households in three communities from three provinces (KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and North West).

Patient and Caregiver Perceptions of Airway Clearance Methods Used for Cystic Fibrosis.

Introduction: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation guidelines recommend people with CF perform daily airway clearance. This can be difficult for patients, as some find it time consuming or uncomfortable. Data comparing airway clearance methods are limited.

Using latent profile analyses to classify subjects with anhedonia based on reward-related measures obtained in the FAST-MAS study.

Background: Growing evidence indicates that anhedonia is a multifaceted construct. This study examined the possibility of identifying subgroups of people with anhedonia using multiple reward-related measures to provide greater understanding the Research Domain Criteria's Positive Valence Systems Domain and pathways for developing treatments.

Methods: Latent profile analysis of baseline data from a study that examined the effects of a novel kappa opioid receptor (KOR) antagonist drug on measures and biomarkers associated with anhedonia was used to identify subgroups.

Development of a Communication Skills Training to Enhance Effective Team Communication in Oncology.

Introduction: Effective communication among members of health care teams is essential to provide quality and patient-centered care, yet many people identify this as a challenge. We developed, implemented, and conducted a preliminary evaluation of a training to enhance communication within oncology teams.

Methods: This training identifies key strategies, communication skills, and process tasks recommended to achieve the goal of using a collaborative approach to navigate communication interactions across members of the hospital team to enhance patient care outcomes and increase team effectiveness.

LDmat: efficiently queryable compression of linkage disequilibrium matrices.

Motivation: Linkage disequilibrium (LD) matrices derived from large populations are widely used in population genetics in fine-mapping, LD score regression, and linear mixed models for Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS). However, these matrices can reach large sizes when they are derived from millions of individuals; hence, moving, sharing and extracting granular information from this large amount of data can be cumbersome.

Results: We sought to address the need for compressing and easily querying large LD matrices by developing LDmat.
