Progenitors and mature cells can maintain the intestinal epithelium by dedifferentiation and facultative intestinal stem cell (fISC) function when active ISCs (aISCs) are lost to damage. Here, we modeled fISC activation in mouse intestinal organoids with doxorubicin (DXR) treatment, a chemotherapeutic known to ablate Lgr5+ aISCs in vivo. Similar fISC gene activation was observed between organoids treated with low versus high DXR, despite significantly decreased survival at the higher dose.

The 1-min sit-to-stand test as a screening tool to assess exercise-induced oxygen desaturation in normoxemic people with interstitial lung disease.

Background: In patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD), exercise-induced desaturation during the 6-min walk test (6MWT), specifically nadir oxygen saturation (nSpO2) of ≤88 % is a negative prognostic marker. As the 6MWT is often impractical for ILD patients, the aim of this study is to compare the 1-min sit-to-stand test (1minSTS) with the 6MWT to detect exercise-induced desaturation.

Methods: Participants were recruited from a tertiary referral clinic with both tests performed on the same day.

However, in previous studies from this lab, topical application of the selective alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist, PNU-282987, has been associated with an increase in the number of retinal neurons in adult murine models both in the presence and absence of injury to the retina. Additionally, studies assaying mitotic markers have shown a substantial increase in the amount of mitotically active and proliferating cells with the topical application of the alpha7 nAChR agonist.

'Severe mental illness': Uses of this term in physical health support policy, primary care practice, and academic discourses in the United Kingdom.

The term severe mental illness (SMI) is often used in academic work, primary care practice, and policy, acknowledging the health disparities experienced by, and need for improved support for, this population. However, here we draw from the varied experiences of our authorship team to reflect on some problematic operationalisations of the term SMI and its usage, specifically in policy, primary care practice, and academic discourses in England and the UK. Benefits of the SMI label in accessing specialised services are evident but, in this commentary, we start a discussion on its necessity and unintended consequences for wider health support.

Fundamentals of wildlife dosimetry and lessons learned from a decade of measuring external dose rates in the field.

Methods for determining the radiation dose received by exposed biota require major improvements to reduce uncertainties and increase precision. We share our experiences in attempting to quantify external dose rates to free-ranging wildlife using GPS-coupled dosimetry methods. The manuscript is a primer on fundamental concepts in wildlife dosimetry in which the complexities of quantifying dose rates are highlighted, and lessons learned are presented based on research with wild boar and snakes at Fukushima, wolves at Chornobyl, and reindeer in Norway.

For many species, the relationship between space use and diet composition is complex, with individuals adopting varying space use strategies such as territoriality to facilitate resource acquisition. Coyotes () exhibit two disparate types of space use; defending mutually exclusive territories (residents) or moving nomadically across landscapes (transients). Resident coyotes have increased access to familiar food resources, thus improved foraging opportunities to compensate for the energetic costs of defending territories.
