Context: Girls' high school volleyball is a popular sport with a high rate of overuse injuries and sport specialization. Health professionals perceive that high school athletes are reluctant to follow treatment plans involving sport activity reduction. This study's purpose was to describe high school girls' volleyball athletes' self-reported shoulder and knee pain, the likelihood of adhering to medical advice, and the association of factors that influence the likelihood of reporting overuse injuries and sport specialization.

Background: Phototherapy is a cornerstone in treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Narrow-band UVB has been shown to be a potent therapeutic tool. To reduce the potential carcinogenic risk, targeted phototherapy has been developed using excimer lasers or excimer light devices (ELD).

Improving wound score classification with limited remission spectra.

The classification of wounds into healing states depending on their absorption spectrum of visible and near infrared light remains an important task in dermatology. Moreover, a reduction of the spectrum that is used in the classification task to fewer but important wavelengths is desirable, as each measured wavelength increases the examination costs without necessarily providing further information to the classification of wound healing states. This paper addresses two aspects: First the improvement of the classification of wounds into healing states and second, a cost reduction by choosing only important wavelengths.

Background: Therapeutic low-frequency ultrasound (US) has been used for many years to improve wound healing in chronic wounds like venous leg ulcers. No human data are available for the possible effects of single US applications on microcirculation and their frequency-dependency.

Two-laser, large-field hyperspectral microarray scanner for the analysis of multicolor microarrays.

We describe the development and operation of a two-laser, large-field hyperspectral scanner for analysis of multicolor genotyping microarrays. In contrast to confocal microarray scanners, in which wavelength selectivity is obtained by positioning band-pass filters in front of a photomultiplier detector, hyperspectral microarray scanners collect the complete visible emission spectrum from the labeled microarrays. Hyperspectral scanning permits discrimination of multiple spectrally overlapping fluorescent labels with minimal use of optical filters, thus offering important advantages over standard filter-based multicolor microarray scanners.

Methods: Overweight, female college students (body mass index > or = 28 kg/m2) were recruited and assessed at baseline and post-treatment for aerobic fitness (Astrand maximal cycle test), weight, skinfold thickness (7-site), and circumference measures (4-site).
