Is there a role for primary care clinicians in providing shared care in HIV treatment? A systematic literature review.

Background: Despite HIV being increasingly considered as a chronic illness, there is as yet no consensus about how primary care should be integrated with specialty care to provide optimal clinical management for people living with HIV.

Objective: To examine the effectiveness of shared care models of HIV between primary care and specialty care and how primary care providers can assist in improving the care of people with HIV.

Methods: Three databases, PubMed, Medline and EMBase, were searched for relevant terms from studies published in the period from 1996 to 2011.

Magneto-optical fiber sensor based on magnetic fluid.

A novel magnetic field fiber sensor based on magnetic fluid is proposed. The sensor is configured as a Sagnac interferometer structure with a magnetic fluid film and a section of polarization maintaining fiber inserted into the fiber loop to produce a sinusoidal interference spectrum for measurement. HIV behavioural risks and the role of work environment among Chinese male sex workers in Hong Kong.

Male sex workers are a highly marginalised group in Hong Kong and it is increasingly so with an influx of them travelling from mainland China to work as "freelance" sex workers. This study aimed to measure important work environment variables that might affect the likelihood of condom use among male sex workers working in Hong Kong. A cross-sectional survey of 161 participants recruited by snowball and convenience sampling methods through outreach workers of a local non-governmental organization was conducted in 2007-2008.

Isoflavones in treating watchful waiting benign prostate hyperplasia: a double-blinded, randomized controlled trial.

Not all transmembrane helices are born equal: Towards the extension of the sequence homology concept to membrane proteins.

Background: Sequence homology considerations widely used to transfer functional annotation to uncharacterized protein sequences require special precautions in the case of non-globular sequence segments including membrane-spanning stretches composed of non-polar residues. Simple, quantitative criteria are desirable for identifying transmembrane helices (TMs) that must be included into or should be excluded from start sequence segments in similarity searches aimed at finding distant homologues.

Results: We found that there are two types of TMs in membrane-associated proteins.

Macrophages in human colorectal cancer are pro-inflammatory and prime T cells towards an anti-tumour type-1 inflammatory response.

High macrophage infiltration into tumours often correlates with poor prognoses; in colorectal, stomach and skin cancers, however, the opposite is observed but the mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain unclear. Here, we sought to understand how tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) in colorectal cancer execute tumour-suppressive roles. We found that TAMs in a colorectal cancer model were pro-inflammatory and inhibited the proliferation of tumour cells.
