Historic bias toward study of sex hormones and sexual ornamentation in males currently constrains our perspective of hormone-behavior-phenotype relationships. Periodic plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on the α-quartz (SiO) (101) surface to model exchange of adsorbed Li and either Na, K, or Rb in inner- and outer-sphere adsorbed, and aqueous configurations, which are charge-balanced with 2 Cl. SiO or SiOH groups represented the adsorption surface sites. The SiO models included 58 HO and 2 HO molecules to approximate an aqueous environment, whereas the SiOH models had 59 HO and 1 HO molecules.

Many organisms use environmental cues to time events in their annual cycle, such as reproduction and migration, with the appropriate timing of such events impacting survival and reproduction. As the climate changes, evolved mechanisms of cue use may facilitate or limit the capacity of organisms to adjust phenology accordingly, and organisms often integrate multiple cues to fine-tune the timing of annual events. The final stage of migration, when animals terminate migratory movements and transition to a more sedentary state, remains the least understood phase of migration. Whereas migrants that return to the same locations each year may use mechanisms associated with locating a specific destination, migrants with low site fidelity, such as nomadic migrants, may rely on local environmental cues to determine when to cease migratory movements. The organometallic H-cluster of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase consists of a [4Fe-4S] cubane bridged via a cysteinyl thiolate to a 2Fe subcluster ([2Fe]H) containing CO, CN-, and dithiomethylamine (DTMA) ligands. The H-cluster is synthesized by three dedicated maturation proteins: the radical SAM enzymes HydE and HydG synthesize the non-protein ligands, while the GTPase HydF serves as a scaffold for assembly of [2Fe]H prior to its delivery to the [FeFe]-hydrogenase containing the [4Fe-4S] cubane. HydG uses l-tyrosine as a substrate, cleaving it to produce p-cresol as well as the CO and CN- ligands to the H-cluster, although there is some question as to whether these are formed as free diatomics or as part of a [Fe(CO)2(CN)] synthon.

Alzheimer's disease, characterized by brain deposits of amyloid-β plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, is also linked to neurovascular dysfunction and blood-brain barrier breakdown, affecting the passage of substances into and out of the brain. The synthesis and characterization of short peptide-based maquettes of metalloprotein active sites facilitate an inquiry into their structure/function relationships and evolution. The [4Fe-4S]-maquettes of bacterial ferredoxin metalloproteins (Fd) have been used in the past to engineer redox active centers into artificial metalloenzymes. The novelty of our study is the application of maquettes to the superfamily of [4Fe-4S] cluster and S-adenosylmethionine-dependent radical metalloenzymes (radical SAM).
