Spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGR) are caused by a group of tick-borne pathogens that are increasing in incidence globally. These diseases are typically underreported and undiagnosed in low- and middle-income countries, and thus, have been classified as neglected bacterial pathogens. Countries with high poverty, low human development index score, and limited health infrastructure-like El Salvador in Central America-lack necessary surveillance for SFGR and other tick-borne pathogens.

Background: Chagas disease is a leading cause of cardiac failure in Latin America. Due to poor safety profiles and efficacy of currently available therapeutics, prevention is a priority for the millions living at risk for acquiring this clinically important vector-borne disease. Triatomine vectors of the Chagas disease parasite, are found in the southwestern United States, but risk for autochthonous transmission is thought to be low.

The segregation of factor B(BF)F subtypes was analyzed in conjunction with other MHC markers in 15 families with 89 offspring. Informative data for BF F subtypes were obtained from 11 families, 6 of them with known recombinant individuals for the HLA-B/DR/GLO region. The subtypes did not contribute further to the localization of the cross-overs, but followed the known segregation of conventional BF allotypes.

The results of the application of the C3 system to 155 cases of disputed paternity are presented. In this preselected material (none of the 234 accused men could be excluded by any of the usual markers of red blood cells and serum) 23 men were excluded. Of these 23 exclusions, 17 could be examined in the HLA-system and were confirmed by this system.

The cyst fluid of cestodes from various animals kept in zoological gardens was examined for the presence of A-, B-, H- and P1-blood group activity. While the results in the ABH-system were negative, the cysts from 2 of 13 animals examined (1 elk and 1 reindeer) presented P1-blood group activity.
