The delivery system is based on microparticles of PolyActive™ hydrogel co-polymer.

This article compares intravenous morphine with intravenous paracetamol for managing pain in patients with isolated limb trauma who then require manipulation under sedation.

We describe a quantitative method for measuring the phase of a propagating wave field in three dimensions by use of a scanning optical-fiber interferometer. Because phase modulation in the reference arm is exploited, this technique is insensitive to large variations in the intensity of the field being studied and is therefore highly suitable for measurement of phase within spatially confined optical beams. It uses only a single detector and is not reliant on lock-in electronics.

Lentigo maligna (LM) is an in situ variant of melanoma. Although LM has the potential for invasion, it often has a greatly protracted radial growth phase and may remain indolent for years. The current standard of care is surgical excision, but this often results in substantial morbidity; thus, nonsurgical approaches continue to be investigated.

Purification of a functional gene therapy vector derived from Moloney murine leukaemia virus using membrane filtration and ceramic hydroxyapatite chromatography.

The ability of membrane ultra- and diafiltration and two chromatography media, Matrex Cellufine Sulfate (Millipore) and Macro-Prep ceramic hydroxyapatite (Bio-Rad), to adsorb, elute, and purify gene therapy vectors based on Moloney murine leukaemia virus (MoMuLV) carrying the 4070A amphotropic envelope protein was studied. Membrane ultra- and diafiltration provided virus concentration up to 160-fold with an average recovery of infectious viruses of 77 +/- 14%. In batch experiments, Macro-Prep ceramic hydroxyapatite (type 2, particle size 40 microm) proved superior to Matrex Cellufine Sulfate for MoMuLV vector particle adsorption.

A waterborne outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections and hemolytic uremic syndrome: implications for rural water systems.

In the summer of 1998, a large outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections occurred in Alpine, Wyoming. We identified 157 ill persons; stool from 71 (45%) yielded E. coli O157:H7.

Theory of near-field magneto-optical imaging.

Scanning near-field optical microscopy has been recently applied to the imaging of magnetic samples. It was shown experimentally that an apertureless microscope suffers a substantial loss of resolution when used for magneto-optical imaging compared with that for conventional imaging. No such change is observed for aperture microscopes.

Nurses in Wales have formed a new society to promote the Welsh language in their work. The chair of the new society, Eira Rowley, professional adviser to the Welsh National Board for Nursing, said with up to 80 per cent of patients in some areas speaking Welsh as their first language, it is important to speak Welsh wherever possible. Ms Rowley said some patients were penalised because they were not so familiar with English as their mother tongue.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a major human pathogen for which the development of an effective vaccine remains an important goal. Rabbits were immunized with one of a set of 10 fusion proteins representing protein fragments from the EBV receptor-binding ligand and candidate subunit vaccine gp340. Sera from recipients of fragments from the amino-terminal half of the polypeptide chain bound gp340 in Western blot assays and ELISA but were not virus-neutralizing.

High-performance liquid chromatographic determination of oxmetidine in human plasma: comparison of liquid-liquid and liquid-solid extraction techniques.

A preliminary liquid-solid sample preparation scheme (LSE) for the HPLC determination of oxmetidine in human plasma is compared with the existing liquid-liquid extraction. The LSE method shows great practical advantages, such as ease of preparation, saving of time, and smaller sample volumes, but needs to be investigated further with respect to robustness and the removal of an endogenous compound that interfered with the quantitation of oxmetidine at low concentrations.

Blood lead and the symptoms of lead absorption.

ABSTRACT Eighty-one percent of all hourly paid men who had been employed for more than six months in a factory making lead acid batteries and plastics completed a modified Cornell medical index health questionnaire. Blood lead and erythrocyte protoporphyrin (EPP) were also measured. The questions were grouped into symptom categories as follows: all physical, all psychological, “potentially lead induced,” pulmonary, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, skin, nervous system, genitourinary, and fatigue.

202-216. Thirty-nine lead workers and controls, in stable conditions of exposure, each wore personal lead-in-air samplers daily for two weeks. During the second week samples for blood lead, urinary lead, urinary coproporphyrin, urinary δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), the punctate basophil count, and haemoglobin were taken daily.

The prevalence of varicose veins was studied in 504 women cotton workers in England and 467 in Egypt, by a standardized questionary and a specially developed method of examination. The English mill population showed a much higher prevalence of varicose veins than the Egyptian, probably owing to environmental rather than ethnic reasons.Among the European women the prevalence of varicose veins was significantly related to age, parity, body weight, type of corsetry, and occupation-that is, whether or not they stood at their work.
