Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify which imaging features can best predict poststroke deficits by analyzing data from three different patient groups who experienced acute strokes.
  • It was found that models trained on small datasets performed well within their own dataset but failed to generalize to new patient data; however, using larger and multicenter datasets significantly improved predictive performance.
  • Including structural and functional disconnection in the models yielded better predictions of stroke severity compared to relying solely on lesion volume or location.

This paper outlines the therapeutic rationale and neurosurgical targeting technique for bilateral, closed-loop, thalamocortical stimulation in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood-onset epilepsy. Thalamic stimulation can be an effective treatment for Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, but complete seizure control is rarely achieved. Outcomes may be improved by stimulating areas beyond the thalamus, including cortex, but the optimal targets are unknown.

Introduction: The preoperative evaluation of Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients for subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) includes the assessment of the neuropsychological status of the patient. A widely used preoperative test is the Mattis Dementia rating scale (MDRS). However, the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) has also been proven to be a sensitive, time-sparing tool with high diagnostic validity in PD.

Background And Objectives: Disorders of consciousness, EEG background suppression, and epileptic seizures are associated with poor outcome after cardiac arrest. Our objective was to identify the distribution of diffusion MRI-measured anoxic brain injury after cardiac arrest and to define the regional correlates of disorders of consciousness, EEG background suppression, and seizures.

Methods: We analyzed patients from a single-center database of unresponsive patients who underwent diffusion MRI after cardiac arrest (n = 204).

Background Lesions of cerebral small vessel disease, such as white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in individuals with cardiometabolic risk factors, interfere with the trajectories of the white matter and eventually contribute to cognitive decline. However, there is no consensus yet about the precise underlying topological mechanism. Purpose To examine whether WMH and cognitive function are associated and whether any such association is mediated or explained by structural connectivity measures in an adult population.

Canine heartworm disease (CHD) results from infection with Dirofilaria immitis and while it is of global concern, it is most prevalent in tropical climates where conditions support the parasite and vector life cycles. Melarsomine dihydrochloride is the sole treatment for CHD recommended by the American Heartworm Society. However, in cases where cost or access to melarsomine precludes treatment of an infected dog, therapeutic alternatives are warranted.

The etiology of late-life depression (LLD) is still poorly understood. Microvascular dysfunction (MVD) has been suggested to play a role in the etiology of LLD, but direct evidence of this association is scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate whether direct and indirect markers of early microvascular dysfunction are associated with prevalent and incident LLD in the population-based Maastricht Study cohort.

Objective: Arteriogenesis, describing the process of collateral artery growth, is activated by fluid shear stress (FSS). Since this vascular mechanotransduction may involve microRNAs (miRNAs), we investigated the FSS-induced expression of vascular cell miRNAs and their functional impact on collateral artery growth during arteriogenesis. Approach and Results: To this end, rats underwent femoral artery ligation and arteriovenous anastomosis to increase collateral blood flow to maximize FSS and trigger collateral vessel remodeling.

Microvascular dysfunction may be associated with worse cognitive performance. Most previous studies did not adjust for important confounders, evaluated only individual measures of microvascular dysfunction, and showed inconsistent results. We evaluated the association between a comprehensive set of measures of microvascular dysfunction and cognitive performance in the population-based Maastricht Study.

Background: Troglostrongylus brevior is a lungworm of wild felids that recently has been recognized as agent of severe respiratory disease in domestic cats in Mediterranean and Balkan countries. Nevertheless, the information on treatment options for feline troglostrongylosis is still poor. The aim of this pilot field trial was to evaluate the efficacy of the spot-on formulation containing 1% w/v moxidectin and 10% w/v imidacloprid (Advocate spot-on solution for cats, Bayer Animal Health GmbH) in the treatment of T.

Heartworm infection (also known as dirofilariosis due to Dirofilaria immitis) in dogs causes chronic pulmonary disease that, if left untreated, can lead to right-side congestive heart failure. Currently, the only registered drug for adulticide therapy in dogs with heartworm disease (HWD) is melarsomine dihydrochloride. The recent targeting of the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia, through antibiotic therapy of the infected host, has offered an interesting alternative for the treatment of HWD.

Objective: To investigate the effect of directional current steering and short pulse stimulation in the ventral intermediate thalamic nucleus (VIM) on stimulation-induced side effects in patients with essential tremor.

Methods: We recruited 8 patients with essential tremor in a stable postoperative condition (>3 months after electrode implantation of deep brain stimulation [DBS] electrodes) with segmented contacts implanted in the VIM. Tremor severity on acute stimulation was assessed by the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor Rating Scale.

Purpose: β-Blockers (BBs) have been associated with a reduced cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). This is possibly caused by inhibition of β2-receptors in the airways. However, there are limited data available on β-receptor selectivity and CRF.

Increased activation of the renin-angiotensin system is involved in the onset and progression of cardiometabolic diseases, while natriuretic peptides (NP) may exert protective effects. We have recently demonstrated that sacubitril/valsartan (LCZ696), a first-in-class angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitor, which blocks the angiotensin II type-1 receptor and augments natriuretic peptide levels, improved peripheral insulin sensitivity in obese hypertensive patients. Here, we investigated the effects of sacubitril/valsartan (400 mg QD) treatment for 8 weeks on the abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (AT) phenotype compared to the metabolically neutral comparator amlodipine (10 mg QD) in 70 obese hypertensive patients.

Purpose: To assess macular thinning in individuals with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes without diabetic retinopathy (DM2 w/o DR) compared with individuals with normal glucose metabolism (NGM).

Methods: Using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), we measured macular thickness in six subfields as defined by the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) in 1838 participants from The Maastricht Study, a population-based cohort study (mean age 59 ± 8 years, 49% men, 1087 NGM, 279 prediabetes, 472 DM2 w/o DR). Multivariable linear regression was used to assess the association between macular thickness and glucose metabolism status.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how platelets help recruit white blood cells to build new blood vessels, which is important for healing.
  • Researchers used special mice and imaging techniques to see how platelets interact with these cells in real-time.
  • They found that a specific platelet protein called GPIbα is essential for this process, and without it, white blood cells can’t attach well, making healing harder.

The flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow (FAPA) is a promising new source for atmospheric-pressure, ambient desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. However, problems exist with reproducible sample introduction into the FAPA source. To overcome this limitation, a new FAPA geometry has been developed in which concentric tubular electrodes are utilized to form a halo-shaped discharge; this geometry has been termed the halo-FAPA or h-FAPA.
