Background: Arteriovenous fistulae (AVF) are the preferred vascular access for hemodialysis in patients with end-stage kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with endothelial injury, impaired AVF maturation, and reduced patency, as well as utilization. Because CKD is characterized by multiple pathophysiological processes that induce endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT), we hypothesized that CKD promotes EndMT during venous remodeling and that disruption of endothelial TGF (transforming growth factor)-β signaling inhibits EndMT to prevent AVF failure even in the end-stage kidney disease environment.

Traffic light optimization is known to be a cost-effective method for reducing congestion and energy consumption in urban areas without changing physical road infrastructure. However, due to the high installation and maintenance costs of vehicle detectors, most intersections are controlled by fixed-time traffic signals that are not regularly optimized. To alleviate traffic congestion at intersections, we present a large-scale traffic signal re-timing system that uses a small percentage of vehicle trajectories as the only input without reliance on any detectors.

Background: Whether or not the temporal relationship between arterial stiffness and systolic blood pressure (SBP) is affected by how strictly SBP is controlled (intensive, 110-<130 mm Hg; standard, 130-<150 mm Hg) has been unclear.

Methods: The temporal relationship between brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and SBP was assessed using a cross-lagged panel model in the 5369 participants in the STEP trial (Strategy of Blood Pressure Intervention in the Elderly Hypertensive Patients) for whom baseline and follow-up baPWV data were complete.

Results: Patients with arterial stiffening (baPWV≥1800 cm/s) at baseline were significantly less likely to achieve their target SBP than those without arterial stiffening in the intensive and standard treatment groups (65.

Introduction: Conventional white light imaging (WLI) endoscopy is the most common screening technique used for detecting early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Nevertheless, it is difficult to detect and delineate margins of early ESCC using WLI endoscopy. This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model to detect and delineate margins of early ESCC under WLI endoscopy.

Background: Nitrates are widely used to treat coronary artery disease, but their therapeutic value is compromised by nitrate tolerance, because of the dysfunction of prostaglandin I2 synthase (PTGIS). MicroRNAs repress target gene expression and are recognized as important epigenetic regulators of endothelial function. The aim of this study was to determine whether nitrates induce nitrovasodilator resistance via microRNA-dependent repression of PTGIS gene expression.

Objective: Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) phenotype change is a hallmark of vascular remodeling, which contributes to atherosclerotic diseases and can be regulated via microRNA-dependent mechanisms. We recently identified that asymmetrical dimethylarginine positively correlates to vascular remodeling-based diseases. We hypothesized that asymmetrical dimethylarginine induces smooth muscle cell (SMC) phenotypic change via a microRNA-dependent mechanism.
