Identification of atypical pediatric diabetes mellitus cases using electronic medical records.

Introduction: There are no established methods to identify children with atypical diabetes for further study. We aimed to develop strategies to systematically ascertain cases of atypical pediatric diabetes using electronic medical records (EMR).

Research Design And Methods: We tested two strategies in a large pediatric hospital in the USA.

A Hemoglobinopathy That Produces an Array of Different Hemoglobin A1c Values.

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) refers to non-enzymatically glycated hemoglobin and reflects the patient's glycemic status over approximately 3 months. An elevated HbA1c over 6.5% National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program (NGSP) (48 mmol/mol the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC)) can be used to diagnose diabetes mellitus.

River plastic transport and storage budget.

Rivers are one of the main conduits that deliver plastic from land into the sea, and also act as reservoirs for plastic retention. Yet, our understanding of the extent of river exposure to plastic pollution remains limited. In particular, there has been no comprehensive quantification of the contributions from different river compartments, such as the water surface, water column, riverbank and floodplain to the overall river plastic transport and storage.

High Prevalence of Ketosis-Prone Diabetes in Children with Type 2 Diabetes and Diabetic Ketoacidosis at Diagnosis: Evidence from the Rare and Atypical Diabetes Network (RADIANT).

Background: ketosis-prone diabetes (KPD) in adults is characterized by presentation with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), negative islet autoantibodies, and preserved -cell function in persons with a phenotype of obesity-associated type 2 diabetes (T2D). The prevalence of KPD has not been evaluated in children. We investigated children with DKA at "T2D" onset and determined the prevalence and characteristics of pediatric KPD within this cohort.

Records of fleas (Siphonaptera) from Delaware.

We present an annotated checklist of fleas (Siphonaptera) known to occur in the state of Delaware based on an examination of Siphonaptera collections at the University of Delaware and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, as well as new specimens of fleas we collected from wildlife, other hosts, and tick flags. We review published records and compile them herein with our new records, which include 3 species previously unreported from Delaware. With these additions, there are now 18 flea species from 19 avian and mammalian hosts documented from Delaware.
