Background: Mechanically ventilated critically ill patients often develop pleural effusions, which may impact lung compliance and expansion. This systematic review explores the management of pleural effusion in the critically ill population.
Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with a myriad of extrahepatic manifestations (EHM), as well as the production of autoantibodies, including rheumatoid factor (RF). This study aims to elucidate whether serum levels of RF change before and after HCV eradication, and whether these changes differ according to the type of therapy used. This is a retrospective cohort study of adults with chronic HCV infection treated with interferon-free or interferon-based regimens.

Objectives: Stroke is common following left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, although comprehensive data on perioperative strokes in this uncommon population is lacking. The current study aim was to characterize the presentation, features, and outcomes of perioperative cerebrovascular ischemia post-LVAD implantation at the authors' institution.
Design: Single-center retrospective cohort.
Cryogenic electron microscopy single particle analysis (cryoEM-SPA) has evolved into a routine approach for determining macromolecule structures to near-atomic resolution. Cryogenic electron tomography subtomogram averaging (cryoET-STA) toward a similar resolution, in contrast, is still under active development. Here, we use the archeal chaperonin MmCpn as a model macromolecule to quantitatively investigate the resolution limiting factors of cryoET-STA in terms of cumulative electron dose, ice thickness, subtomogram numbers, and tilt angle ranges.
