Total hip arthroplasty with a superior approach and in situ preparation of the femoral stem: technique and feasibility in a prospective series of 80 cases.

We report on the feasibility of a technique for total hip replacement with in situ preparation of the femoral stem through a superior approach and with the use of standard instruments. From December 2017 to august 2018, 100 patients were recruited for total hip replacement. 80 patients underwent THA through a superior approach with femoral broaching before femoral neck cut.

Prosthetic joint infection due to Mycobacterium bovis 5-years after BCG-instillations.

The Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) has been used as intravesical immunotherapy for superficial urothelial bladder carcinoma in preventing its recurrence. Prosthetic joint infections due to those instillations are very rare and few practitioners know this side effect. We report the case of a 77-year old male with a medical history of right hip replacement and super- ficial urothelial bladder carcinoma treated with BCG-instillations.

Dislocation after total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains a devastating complication and a primary cause for revision arthroplasty. Historical data indicate that a posterior approach is associated with a higher dislocation rate. In this study, we present a highly reliable and anatomical reconstruction, based on the biomechanical findings of a previous cadaveric experiment.

False aneurysm of the superficial femoral artery following minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis of a femoral shaft fracture.

We present the case of a 50-year-old man who developed a delayed progressive swelling over the medial aspect of his right thigh, six weeks following minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) of a supracondylar femur fracture. Angiography showed a false aneurysm of the superficial femoral artery, caused by progressive displacement of a butterfly fragment. Open vascular repair was performed and the sharp edge of the butterfly fragment was removed.

Treatment of basal joint arthritis of the thumb: trapeziectomy with or without tendon interposition/ligament reconstruction.

This prospective study compared the outcome--subjective, objective and radiographic--of two surgical techniques for treating basal joint arthritis of the thumb: a "simple" trapeziectomy (group I) and a ligament reconstruction/tendon (group II) interposition technique. There were respectively 22 patients in group I and 34 in group II, all women with primary osteoarthritis. Both techniques gave favourable results and there were no significant differences for pain relief, patient satisfaction, mobility, DASH-score, key pinch force and gripping force.
