Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a distinct form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) derived from CD5+ B cells. MCL cells overexpress cyclin D1 as a consequence of translocation of the gene into the immunoglobulin heavy-chain gene locus. MCL is an aggressive form of NHL with frequent relapses after standard-dose chemotherapy.

Objective: To evaluate the prevailing mortality paradox that second-born twins are at higher risk of perinatal mortality than first-born twins.

Methods: We used the 1995-1997 United States "matched multiple birth" data files assembled by the National Center for Health Statistics, for analysis of risk of perinatal mortality in first- and second-born twins (293788 fetuses). Perinatal mortality was defined to include stillbirths after 20 weeks of gestation and neonatal deaths (deaths within the first 28 days).

Adenovirus infection represents a cellular stress that induces host cell pro-apoptotic responses. To overcome this barrier to productive infection, viral polypeptides modulate a variety of host cell pathways. The interface of these early viral gene products with key cellular regulatory proteins has provided considerable information concerning basic cellular mechanisms operative in cell cycle regulation, transcriptional control and apoptosis.

We have studied adenovirus-mediated cytotoxicity after infection of malignant cells obtained from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Our studies indicate that adenoviruses can infect primary CLL cells and that infection of CLL cells with a replication-competent strain of human adenovirus 5 (Ad5dl309) results in cytotoxicity. Adenovirus-mediated cytotoxicity was also seen after infection of CLL cells with a variety of viruses attenuated by mutations in the adenovirus early region 1 (E1) or early region 2 (E2).
