Background: QVA149 is a once-daily (o.d.) inhaled dual bronchodilator containing a fixed-dose combination of the long-acting β2-agonist indacaterol and the long-acting muscarinic antagonist glycopyrronium for the treatment of COPD.

This is the first study to compare the effect of budesonide/formoterol and salmeterol/fluticasone on lung function, symptoms and activities early in the morning.
Methods: Lung function (peak expiratory flow [PEF] and forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV( 1)]) and symptoms were measured at bedside and activities were measured during the morning using a six-item questionnaire concerning basic morning routines.
Bronchial epithelial cells (BEC) are the progenitors of bronchogenic carcinomas and are exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) procarcinogens through inhalation of combustion products. PAH are converted to carcinogenic molecules through a combination of monoxygenation by cytochrome p450 (CYP) enzymes in the presence of NADPH oxidoreductase (OR) and hydrolysis by microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEH). In artificial systems, the relative expression of these genes determines whether carcinogenic or noncarcinogenic species are generated during metabolism.

Expression was measured by multiplex competitive PCR amplification of (a) cDNA from GSH-Px and the "housekeeping" gene glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and (b) two internal standards consisting of single-base mutants of GSH-Px and GAPDH cDNA that cause either a loss (GSH-Px) or a gain (GAPDH) of an EcoRI restriction endonuclease recognition site. RNA extracted from a human papillomavirus-immortalized human bronchial epithelial cell line (BEP2D) was reverse transcribed.

We therefore studied the effect of epinephrine and norepinephrine on MDO2 and MVO2 using OCCM after five minutes of cardiopulmonary arrest in 21 pigs. After OCCM of three minutes, seven animals each received placebo (controls) or epinephrine (45 micrograms/kg) or norepinephrine (45 micrograms/kg).
