Background And Purpose: Radiotherapy for bulky tumors often results in palliation with suboptimal outcomes. The prognosis is worsened by immunosuppression caused by radio-chemotherapy, negatively impacting on survival. Novel Partial Tumor Irradiation (PTI) was designed to spare the Peritumoral Immune Microenvironment (PIM) and to be delivered synchronously with immune activity peaks, thus enhancing both local and distant tumor control through immunostimulation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: A comprehensive evaluation of the current national and regional radiotherapy capacity in Austria with an estimation of demands for 2020 and 2030 was performed by the Austrian Society for Radiation Oncology, Radiobiology and Medical Radiophysics (ÖGRO).
Materials And Methods: All Austrian centers provided data on the number of megavoltage (MV) units, treatment series, fractions, percentage of retreatments and complex treatment techniques as well as the daily operating hours for the year 2014. In addition, waiting times until the beginning of radiotherapy were prospectively recorded over the first quarter of 2015.

Bone metastases are usually associated with a variety of skeletal related events (SREs), a term covering both complications (pathological fractures, spinal cord compression) and the need for therapeutic intervention (radiotherapy, surgery to bone) for painful bone lesions and/or lesions carrying a high risk of fracture by which the patient's quality of life, functioning, and independence may be compromised. In view of the availability of improved therapeutic approaches for oncological diseases and the resulting improvements of median overall survival, the aim of preventing and delaying the occurrence of SREs becomes more important. To avoid, wherever possible, therapies requiring hospitalization, is another relevant goal.

This, however, is only possible with an accurately pretherapeutic diagnostic regimen and closely posttherapeutic follow-up.
Methods: These issues were discussed by nuclear medicine experts, otorhinolaryngologists, oral surgeons, radiologists, radio-oncologists and oncologists in a meeting that took place in Pörtschach, Austria, on 05 May 2006.
