Background: Neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) has become the standard treatment for esophageal cancer (EC) in North America. The cisplatin/5-flurouracil (5-FU) combination has been the most commonly used regimen. For the last 15 years we incorporated a daily continuous infusion of 5-FU and 2 doses of cisplatin into our neoadjuvant CCRT for potentially resectable EC.

Background: The development of distant metastases of squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (SCCA) is rare but has a poor prognosis. A combination of carboplatin and paclitaxel is commonly used for treating squamous cell cancer in different organs, but its efficacy in advanced SCCA is unclear. The objective of this study is to determine the tolerability and outcome of patients with advanced SCCA on carboplatin plus paclitaxel treatment at the Moffitt Cancer Center.

Emerging data suggests a benefit for using intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for the management of esophageal cancer. We retrospectively reviewed patients treated at our institution who received definitive or preoperative chemoradiation with either IMRT or 3D conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT) between October 2000 and January 2012. Kaplan Meier analysis and the Cox proportional hazard model were used to evaluate survival outcomes.

Purpose: We compared our institutional experience using 3D conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT) vs. IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) for anal cancer.

Methods: We performed a single-institution retrospective review of all patients with squamous cell carcinoma anal cancer treated from September 2000 through September 2011, using definitive chemoradiation with curative intent.

Rationale: BMS-188797 is one of several novel taxanes in ongoing clinical development. It has superior activity in experimental tumor models when compared with paclitaxel. BMS-188797 has a single C-4 modification, a 4-desacetyl-4-methylcarbonate, compared with paclitaxel.
