Cytokine secretion by activated lymphocytes or mast cells is preceded by dramatic stabilization of the normally labile GM-CSF mRNA. The 3'-untranslated region of GM-CSF and other labile mRNAs contain the destabilizing motif adenosine-uridine-uridine-uridine-adenosine (AUUUA).
