Introduction: Standard operating procedures (SOP), accessible to several laboratories, are essential for product verification. EU-JATC (European-Joint Action on Tobacco Control) SOP and the WHO TobLabNet (World Health Organization Tobacco Laboratories Network) SOP (SOP11) are available standard methodologies to measure nicotine, glycerol, and propylene glycol, and propose mass spectrometer (MS) as an alternative method to flame ionization detector (FID). This study conducted a comparison between FID and MS concentration results, following the MS method described in SOP11.

Although some studies have investigated the chemical composition of HEETS emissions, little is known on whether toxicant levels in such emissions are affected by different puffing parameters and flavor varieties. This has important implications when assessing actual human exposure, since IQOS users develop a specific and personalized puffing behavior and may use different HEETS variants.

However, estimating PBK parameters remains challenging and commonly requires animal studies. To develop predictive models to estimate PBK parameter values based on NP characteristics, a database containing PBK parameter values and corresponding NP characteristics is needed.

During the pyrolysis and combustion of tobacco, reactive aldehydes such as acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde are formed, which are known to be involved in respiratory toxicity. Although CS-induced mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in the pathophysiology of COPD, the role of aldehydes therein is incompletely understood.
