Linking Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data to tobacco control policy in Suriname.

Objective:: To use evidence from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) to inform tobacco-control policy in Suriname.

Materials And Methods:: The GYTS was conducted in 2000, 2004 and 2009 among secondary school students (13 to 15 years) in a two-stage cluster sample design.

Results:: 2744 students, age 13 to 15, participated.

Tipping the scales: educating surgeons about medical malpractice.

Background: In Pennsylvania, medical malpractice premiums are a major cost to surgeons. Yet surgeons often have little if any education in the basics of tort litigation or how to manage their risk. This work describes one approach for educating academic faculty surgeons on current concepts of medical malpractice and provide some guidance on how to "tip the scales of justice"; or minimize the risks of being named in a malpractice claim.

Dollars, lobbying, and secrecy: how campaign contributions and lobbying affect public policy.

Public policy is too often determined not by the merits of the case but, rather, by individuals, corporations, and even countries who buy influence and alter public policy for the benefit of only a few. As a wrap-up for this conference on "Corporate Interference with Science and Health: Fracking, Food and Wireless," it is our intent to provide a personal story of how money can buy favors and determine policies that are often counter to the public interest and can even lead to failure to protect the health of the public. Given our background in law specific to the US, the basis of our evidence comes from legal rulings as well as legislative actions that have had an impact on policies in the US.

Blood mineral, hormone, and osteocalcin responses of multiparous Jersey cows to an oral dose of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 or vitamin D3 before parturition.

Twenty-seven multiparous Jersey cows were randomly assigned to receive an oral bolus containing corn starch (control, CON), corn starch plus 15 mg of 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) (25-OH), or 15 mg of cholecalciferol (D(3)) at 6 d before expected parturition. Cows were maintained in individual box stalls from 20 d before expected parturition and fed a common diet. Jugular blood samples were collected at -14, -13, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1 d before expected calving, at calving, and at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 28, 56, and 84 d postcalving.

Exhuming the body: revisiting the role of the visible body in ethnographic research.

Looking back is often painful. Although in the first instance I might approach a research project with enthusiasm and confidence, in retrospect the sins of omission can become very obvious. In reviewing five research projects employing qualitative ethnographic methods, I explored the underacknowledged role of the visible body in these projects.
