Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the Galapagos Islands: Native or adventive?

Invasive species are a threat to ecosystems worldwide, but determining if a species is adventive or native is not always straightforward. The black flies that inhabit the Galapagos Islands, long known as Simulium ochraceum, are blood-feeding pests of humans and livestock. They first came to the attention of residents in 1989, suggesting a recent arrival.

Fate of nondiagnostic thyroid fine needle aspirations.

Background: Thyroid nodules may be detected during the workup of thyroid hormone abnormalities and as incidental findings during unrelated imaging studies. The diagnosis of a thyroid nodule is mainly established by performing fine needle aspiration (FNA) under ultrasound guidance. Thyroid nodules are classified as nondiagnostic, defined in the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology as samples with excess blood, cyst fluid only, and lack of thyroid follicular cells.

Evaluation of Brain Function Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment in a Porcine Model by Cross-Group Temporal-Spatial Correlation Analysis.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a significant global health issue, is affecting ∼69 million annually. To better understand TBI's impact on brain function and assess the efficacy of treatments, this study uses a novel temporal-spatial cross-group approach with a porcine model, integrating resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) for temporal and arterial spin labeling for spatial information. Our research used 18 four-week-old pigs divided into three groups: TBI treated with saline (SLN, = 6), TBI treated with fecal microbial transplant (FMT, = 6), and a sham group (sham, = 6) with only craniectomy surgery as the baseline.

MEK1/2- and ERK1/2-Mediated Lung Endothelial Injury and Altered Hemostasis Promote Diffuse Alveolar Hemorrhage in Murine Lupus.

Objective: About 3% of patients with lupus develop severe diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) with pulmonary vasculitis. C57BL/6 (B6) mice with pristane-induced lupus also develop DAH, but BALB/c mice are resistant. DAH is independent of Toll-like receptor signaling and other inflammatory pathways.
